Actively providing knowledge in the academic field, UPT Library and Undip Press held a webinar series by inviting the author of scientific papers, Dr. Gesang Setyadi who currently serves as Vice President Environmental PT. Freeport Indonesia. The 27th Webinar Series with the theme “Success in Writing Thesis and Dissertation” was held through the Zoom Meeting application (05/09).
The report on the implementation of the activities was submitted by the Chair of the 27th Webinar Series, Pujo Winarno, S.Kom who stated that the theme of the event was quite interesting because the writing of theses and dissertations was a requirement for completing both master and doctoral studies. In addition, 1305 participants have joined the Zoom meeting and Dr. Gesang Setyadi was also present as a professional webinar speaker in the field of scientific writing.
The Head of UPT Library and Undip Press, Suwondo, S.S., M.Kom welcomed this event. “Thank you to the participants who attended and the committees who prepared the 27th Webinar Series today. The theme of Successful Thesis and Dissertation Writing cannot be separated from the requests of several students who want to understand how a dissertation is written to its publication, which can later be discussed with our resource person, Dr. Gesang Setyadi,” he said.
The resource person for the 27th Webinar Series, Dr. Gesang Setyadi has written 6 indexed publications and 4 of them are as first author, including author of a book on marine biodiversity in the Cenderawasih Marine National Park, main author of the book Biota Aquatic with researcher from LIPI, Dwi Listyo Rahayu, and is currently writing a book on mangroves. Dr. Gesang is also a student who is in the fastest category to complete a thesis while studying for an undergraduate degree at Undip.
Dr. Gesang Setyadi conveyed that there are two main topics that will be discussed in the presentation of the material, namely, how to write a good thesis and dissertation as well as international journal publications. “When writing a thesis and dissertation, the first thing to do is make a plan. There are still many students who are confused about research topics because in choosing a topic they must consider many things including the ability to carry out research, the costs incurred for research, and a rational mind. We have to focus on research and think rationally in choosing topics that suit our time and financial capabilities.” he said.
In making research, the selection of methods is also very important to facilitate research work because the method used will be closely related to research references. The selection of careless methods will affect the difficulty of making international publications. It must be ensured that the scientific basis is accurate so that when the method is implemented, it does not become a question again because ideally there should be several references that are in accordance with the standard. Vice President Environmental PT. Freeport Indonesia explained a strategy for completing a dissertation quickly based on his experience, “If you want to finish quickly and get good grades, just use English. Actually, at the time of my dissertation, the requirements were enough to use Indonesian, but in the end I used English even though when I made the proposal I used Indonesian. Since my publication had already been published 3 times I immediately used English, this will make it easier for me because I copy the material from what I’ve published in English.” he said.
Dr. Gesang Setyadi also added, in addition to the selection of methods, time management is also an important thing in compiling research, special time dedication is needed to focus on doing research. (Afifah – Public Relations)
