The Innovation Work of the FSM UNDIP Team Won the Best International Invention & Innovation and the Gold Medal from the National Research Council of Thailand

The student team of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Diponegoro University (FSM Undip), led by Erika Putri Juarsa (FSM, Biotechnology class of 2021) with members Fitra Ari Aditya (FSM, Biology class of 2021) and M. Irfan Hakim (FSM, Chemistry class of 2021) won an award as Best International Invention & Innovation from the National Research Council of Thailand and received a Gold Medal from the 6th China (Shanghai) International Invention and Innovation Expo 2023 event on June 15-17, 2023 in Shanghai, China.

Previously the FSM Undip student team had made various thorough preparations for 4 to 5 months before the start of the international competition. In this international competition, the FSM Undip student team created an innovative work entitled Scar Fading Ointment Formulated with Nile Tilapia Collagen (Oreochromis niloticus) and Turmeric Curcumin (Curcuma longa Linn).

“The innovation that we bring is in the form of a product called Samina, an ointment to help heal wounds and fade scars. This ointment is formulated from collagen extracted from the skin of Black Tilapia fish and Turmeric Curcumin,” said Erika Putri Juarsa, Team Leader, when contacted by the Public Relations team on Thursday (22/06).

Erika and her team chose this material because, according to several scientific journals, human collagen and black tilapia fish collagen are the same type. “In Brazil, it has also been used for traditional medicine, such as burn wounds attached with the skin of Black Tilapia fish for healing, and has been proven to heal for ten days,” continued Erika.

In addition, Black Tilapia fish collagen is a substitute for non-Halal collagen such as pork collagen. “In Indonesia, which is predominantly Muslim, it is forbidden to use pork collagen. So we are looking for innovations to replace that material. Then mixed with Curcumin Turmeric,” he said.

Turmeric is already known as anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. “This ointment can heal and fade wounds in the maturation stage, where at the maturation stage it usually itches so that Curcumin Turmeric can relieve itching,” added Erika.

With the results of these innovations, the FSM Undip student team achieved a proud achievement in the form of an award as Best International Invention & Innovation and won a Gold Medal.

“We did not expect to win the championship. I am also happy and proud to be able to bring the good name of the study program and faculty, as well as Undip, to the international stage. Thank you to Undip and all my friends for their help and support so far so that my team and I can achieve this achievement,” said Erika.

Erika added that as an Undip student, you must appear confident and develop yourself by honing your skills, and don’t be easily satisfied with your results. “There has to be an achievable target. Increase innovation and competitiveness so we are optimistic about achieving academic and non-academic achievements,” he concluded.
