UNDIP Community Service Team Provides Counseling on the Dangers of Online Gambling: Avoid and Stay Away!

Karanganyar, Jawa Tengah – Eka Yudiana Saputri, a student from the Faculty of Law, Universitas Diponegoro (Undip), successfully conducted a legal counseling session titled “Online Gambling: Recognize, Face, Avoid” as part of the UNDIP Community Service Program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata / KKN) Team II for 2023/2024. This legal counseling was prompted by the increasing number of online gambling users in Indonesia, particularly among the younger generation. The target audience of the legal counseling was the youth of Karang Taruna Dukuh Dungiri, Bolong Village, and the event took place on Saturday (27/07/2024).

The purpose of this legal counseling was to empower the community, especially young people, to become more aware of the law and to understand the dangers of online gambling. With the advancement of technology, gambling is no longer limited to conventional methods but is now conducted electronically via the Internet. Alarmingly, Indonesia ranks as the country with the most online gambling users in the world, with the majority being young people.

This activity aimed to provide an understanding of how online gambling is regulated by Indonesian law, raise awareness of the dangers of online gambling in all aspects of life, and increase public awareness to combat the growing issue of online gambling collectively.

The program was carried out by providing a comprehensive explanation of online gambling and how it differs from traditional gambling, outlining the forms of online gambling that should be avoided, which are commonly found on websites, explaining the dangers of online gambling in all aspects of life, and emphasizing the legal regulations and penalties for online gambling in Indonesia as stipulated in the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (UU ITE).

Additionally, the session included guidance on how to prevent and combat online gambling in the community, as well as information on reporting channels for online gambling websites. After the presentation, a poster summarizing the legal regulations and dangers of online gambling was handed over to the head of Karang Taruna Dukuh Dungiri to be displayed in strategic locations around Bolong Village.

Eka, the initiator of this legal counseling, expressed her hope that the youth in Bolong Village would not only be aware of online gambling but also avoid it, understand the legal aspects, be conscious of its dangers, and actively contribute to preventing and eradicating online gambling, starting with themselves, their families, and their communities. Her hope is for the young generation to be free from the influence of online gambling and for the formation of an Indonesian society that is anti-gambling. (E.Y. Saputri)
