Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) has once again been recognized as the 2nd Most Sustainable University in Indonesia according to the 2024 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. At the Asian level, UNDIP ranks 4th, while globally, it holds the 26th position.
Nationally, UNDIP has consistently secured the 2nd position in the UI GreenMetric Rankings for five consecutive years since 2020. In 2024, UNDIP competed against 183 universities across Indonesia. The 1st position nationally is held by Universitas Indonesia (UI), followed by Universitas Diponegoro, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in 3rd place, Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) University in 4th, Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) in 5th, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) in 6th, Universitas Airlangga in 7th, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember in 8th, Universitas Islam Negeri Raden Intan Lampung in 9th, and Universitas Padjajaran in 10th.
This prestigious award was received directly by UNDIP Rector Prof. Dr. Suharnomo, S.E., M.Si., during the main event held at Graha Sanusi, Universitas Padjadjaran, on December 17, 2024, which was also broadcast online.
Upon receiving the award, Prof. Suharnomo expressed UNDIP’s strong commitment to supporting all indicators outlined by UI GreenMetric. Currently, UNDIP is implementing seawater desalination technology in Jepara, Demak, and Blora. This technology converts brackish water into drinkable water, producing approximately 200,000 liters of clean water daily for residents.
UNDIP is also developing D’Ozone technology for farmers in various regions across Indonesia, which helps remove pesticide residues from vegetables.
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings are based on 51 indicators under six criteria: Settings & Infrastructure, Energy & Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, and Education & Research. In the UI GreenMetric Trees Rating, UNDIP maintained a score of 4.5.
Meanwhile, Prof. Hadiyanto, Director of Reputation, Partnerships, and Global Connectivity, expressed his delight at UNDIP’s achievement, calling it a proud accomplishment.
He also emphasized the institution’s commitment to innovation in supporting future UI GreenMetric rankings, including maintaining green open spaces, creating vertical gardens and arboretums, enhancing facilities and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) practices, utilizing renewable energy, and adopting water sources like reservoirs and rainwater harvesting systems.
In research, UNDIP continues to strengthen studies and implement findings that are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Environmental conservation efforts include tree planting, plant maintenance, wildlife conservation, fish stocking, river clean-ups, and more.
As a green campus, UNDIP consistently supports achieving SDG goals such as Clean Water and Sanitation (Goal 6), Affordable and Clean Energy (Goal 7), Sustainable Cities and Communities (Goal 11), Climate Action (Goal 13), and Life on Land (Goal 15).
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, initiated by Universitas Indonesia in 2010, assess green campuses and environmental sustainability. In 2024, 1,477 universities from around the world participated, including institutions from 11 new countries: Algeria, Angola, Benin, Ghana, Haiti, Kenya, Libya, Niger, South Korea, Uganda, and Yemen.
