Collaborating with Stakeholders, UNDIP Makes Its Campuses in Batang and Jepara Regencies Food Security Centers

UNDIP, Batang (February 25, 2025) – The Off-Campus Management Body (Badan Pengelola Kampus di Luar Kampus Utama / BPK2U) of Universitas Diponegoro held three significant events: the Launch of the Comprehensive Agricultural Solutions Program in collaboration with PT BISI International Tbk., the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Closed House Teaching Farm funded by PT Charoen Pokphand Indonesia Tbk., and the Inauguration of the Entrepreneurship Building at Universitas Diponegoro Batang Campus, sponsored by PT Cisarua Mountain Dairy Tbk. The event took place at UNDIP’s Batang campus, showcasing a strategic partnership between the university and these major corporations.

The Rector of UNDIP, Prof. Dr. Suharnomo, S.E., M.Si., highlighted that UNDIP’s contributions extend beyond Jawa Tengah to the entire nation. One example is the desalination machine, invented by Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Widiasa, S.T., M.T., a professor from the Faculty of Engineering, which converts brackish water into potable water. Several local governments have already placed orders for this technology to address clean water shortages. At UNDIP’s Jepara Campus, under Prof. Nyoman’s management, the machine currently produces 200,000 liters of clean water daily, which is distributed free of charge to the local community.

Beyond water solutions, the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science UNDIP has collaborated with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to develop biosaline rice. This variety can thrive in high-salinity soils or brackish water conditions, improving rice productivity and resilience. Biosaline rice and saline tilapia farming have already been introduced in Jepara as part of food security innovations.

“If the main campus is an excellent research center, then the UNDIP Batang campus must become an excellence center for agriculture, while the UNDIP Jepara campus should be an excellence center for fisheries,” stated Prof. Suharnomo. This effort is to support the government in realizing food security. “And more importantly, all innovative products from UNDIP can provide benefits to the community- similar to the UNDIP tagline, Noble and Valuable UNDIP,” he added.

The Head of BPK2U, Prof. Dr. Ir. Bambang W.H.E.P., M.S., M.Agr., IPU, reported that on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, UNDIP signed several Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with leading companies, including:

The event continued with the launch of the Comprehensive Agricultural Solutions Program in collaboration with PT BISI International Tbk. As part of this initiative, an Agricultural Clinic was established at UNDIP Batang Campus to provide modern agricultural facilities. The clinic will offer high-quality agricultural seeds, expert guidance for farmers, and solutions for farming challenges.

This initiative aims to boost agricultural productivity and is managed by PT BISI International in partnership with UNDIP Batang’s Agribusiness Undergraduate Program.

The final segment of the event was the symbolic groundbreaking of the Closed House Teaching Farm, funded by PT Charoen Pokphand Indonesia Tbk. This state-of-the-art poultry farm will implement modern technology to enhance efficiency and maximize poultry production.

These initiatives embody the Triple Helix concept, a collaborative strategy involving universities, industries, and the government to drive innovation, economic growth, and food security. (Mnd and Ut – Media Relations)
