Vienna, Austria (May 15, 2025) – Dr. Phil. Nuriyatul Lailiyah, S.Sos., M.I.Kom., a lecturer in the Communication Science Program at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), spoke at the international forum Dialogue Perspectives: Vienna Citizen Lab 2025, held May 11–14, 2025, in Vienna, Austria. She presented the challenges of social media algorithms and the spread of hate speech from the perspective of political societies in Asia.
The forum is part of the European Union’s research project TWON (Twin of Online Social Networks), which studies the impact of social media on democracy and the regulation of digital platforms. Dr. Nuriyatul Lailiyah, S.Sos. was the sole representative from Indonesia and the only speaker from Asia, joining others from European countries, including Germany, Italy, Austria, the Netherlands, and Greece.
In her session, Nuriyatul, who recently earned her doctoral degree from Goethe University in Germany, explained how social media algorithms and AI-powered recommendation systems have amplified disinformation and hate speech in digital spaces. She emphasized the need for greater accountability from digital platforms, citing the current lack of transparency, and called for regulatory and content moderation systems that prioritize public safety and rights.
Drawing on her experience in community service, which includes digital literacy for children, teenagers, teachers, and parents in Indonesia, Nuriyatul shared community-based strategies that can be replicated to strengthen users’ resilience against misinformation. She also emphasized the importance of enhancing public understanding of how algorithms function and how to mitigate the risks of bias and polarization in online interactions.

Dr. Nuriyatul’s active participation in this global forum reflects the vital contribution of Indonesian academics in shaping solutions to today’s digital-age challenges. Her presence also fostered strategic opportunities for international networking and collaboration, reinforcing UNDIP’s commitment to expanding its global role in communication, technology, and digital democracy.
