UNDIP Held Interesting Webinar on Techniques and Writing Tips in Scientific Journals

UPT Library and Undip Press in collaboration with the Communication Forum for Librarians and Library Managers at Diponegoro University (FKP3U) held a Series 4 Webinar with the theme “Techniques and Writing Tips in Scientific Journals” (9/3).

The event was opened directly by the Vice Rector III, Prof. Budi Setiyono, S.Sos., M.Pol.Admin. “This webinar examines knowledge that is useful for us, Techniques and Writing Tips in Scientific Journals is an interesting topic. Scientific academic writing departs from complex issues around us and we must be able to create and contribute significantly to the development of human civilization. We are very grateful for the initiatives of our fellow librarians in this webinar, hopefully it will increase the knowledge and competence of the participants,” he said.

Presented as a resource person, Dra. Labibah Zain, M. Lis (Library Science Lecturer / Head of Library of UIN Sunan Kalijaga), in her material explained scientific writing consisting of Chapter I: Introduction (background, problems and objectives), Chapter II: Theoretical Framework (explanation of the theory used to conduct research), Chapter III: Writing Methods (explaining the writing method used, for example using descriptive research methods), Chapter IV: Data Analysis (data analysis to produce findings as stated in the objectives), Chapter V: Conclusions (conclusions and suggestions). Submitting articles to the Journal needs to pay attention to the scope, style, template and ID.

“We have to change the mindset that writing is something fun, not something difficult so that it creates motivation and strong will, catches ideas, gets serious and finally you can start writing. Ideas are scattered everywhere but we have to catch them, take them one by one, write them down and choose which one to write and process it,” she said.

Furthermore, Dra. Labibah conveyed that the practice of looking for ideas includes paying attention and listening to the environment around us and the experiences that are closest to us. Meanwhile, tips for novice writers include understanding something that is liked, known, trending and even unpleasant so that we have ideas to improve it.

“The first steps in writing are to find ideas, determine themes, create an outline, write them down or move what’s in your head regardless of anything, such as grammar, scientific or not, good or not, then edit and tidy up according to the framework that has been prepared. Then a research is conducted based on the ideas which are initially still in the form of assumptions. We can search for data by reading research results related to the theme, theoretical basis, writing down the bibliography and inserting it into a draft and then editing it again. The next process is a Peer Review or asking a friend for help to read and correct the writing, re-edit it based on a friend’s input, then finishing and publishing it,” she explained.
