Resilience as the Key to Student Mental Health: UNDIP’s Contribution at the International Positive Psychology Forum

UNDIP, Brisbane (July 16, 2025) – Dr.phil. Dian Veronika Sakti Kaloeti, S.Psi., M.Psi., a faculty member from the Faculty of Psychology at Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), presented her latest research at the prestigious World Congress on Positive Psychology 2025, hosted by the International Positive Psychology Association (IPPA), on Saturday, July 5, in Brisbane, Australia.

In a scientific session attended by global scholars, Dr. Kaloeti—known by her colleagues as Vio—delivered a presentation titled “Academic Self-Efficacy, Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Symptoms among First-Year Undergraduate Students: Resilience as Mediator.”

Her research revealed that while students may possess strong academic self-confidence, resilience plays a more decisive role in maintaining their mental well-being during their first year in college. She emphasized the importance of academic culture and learning environments that support adaptability and psychological flexibility.

She also advocated for a Positive Education approach, which teaches coping skills, fosters a growth mindset, and helps students recognize their strengths—elements that serve as an effective model for promoting healthy adjustment throughout university life.

A key takeaway from the study is that resilience is not an innate trait, but rather a skill that can be taught and nurtured within higher education systems. Dr. Vio emphasized the importance of adopting systemic approaches rooted in positive psychology and tailored to local cultural contexts, which can better support student well-being during this critical life transition.

Through this forum, UNDIP—represented by the Faculty of Psychology—established cross-national research collaborations and opened avenues for future international academic partnerships. This effort strengthens Universitas Diponegoro’s International Academic Networking initiative, a strategic pillar in enhancing global competitiveness and institutional reputation.
