Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) has once again made history by securing the 4th best position in Indonesia in the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities for the January 2025 edition. This achievement marks UNDIP’s highest achievement since first being included in the Webometrics rankings.
UNDIP ranked 4th nationally and 995th globally, surpassing prominent Indonesian universities such as Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB), Universitas Sebelas Maret, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad), and Universitas Brawijaya.
The Rector of UNDIP, Prof. Suharnomo, stated that this achievement is not only a source of pride but also a remarkable gift at the beginning of 2025. In 2022, we were ranked 21st in Indonesia. In 2023, UNDIP moved up to 8th place, experienced a slight drop in early 2024, and now it has climbed to 4th place. “Hopefully, this will serve as motivation for all UNDIP academics to continue excelling,” he added.
Prof. Dr. Adian Fatchur Rochim, S.T., M.T., Vice Rector III for Human Resources, Information Technology, Law, and Organization, explained that in July 2024, UNDIP’s domain was affected by illegal backlinks, causing a temporary drop to 374th nationally. This issue was taken seriously by UNDIP’s IT team, whose hard work in monitoring the official website has now paid off with this significant ranking improvement.
However, he emphasized that this ranking is not solely due to the IT team’s efforts but also the result of the hard work of all UNDIP lecturers. “In the January 2025 edition, Cybermetrics Lab used two indicators: webometric and bibliometric. The ranking is not only based on the structure of the university’s website but also the number of scientific publications, citations of faculty and researchers, and the reputation of publishers,” he added.
Meanwhile, Wijayanto, S.IP., M.Si., Ph.D., Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, Collaboration, and Public Communication, stated that UNDIP is committed to making a significant contribution to global academic discourse. UNDIP demonstrates this commitment by enhancing its visibility in the digital public space through various strategies. This ranking is a reflection of that commitment.
January 2025 Ranking Methodology
The Webometrics system was developed by Cybermetrics Lab, Spain, and is published twice a year (January and July). This ranking assesses the accuracy of university websites in relation to academic performance.
On its website, Dr. Isidro F. Aguillo, head of the Cybermetrics Laboratory at the Instituto de Bienes y Políticas Públicas (IPP), explains that the Webometrics Ranking has been published since 2004 with the aim of promoting open access to knowledge generated by universities.
The January 2025 edition includes nearly 32,000 higher education institutions (HEIs) worldwide. The ranking model is based on webometric and bibliometric indicators gathered from trusted sources such as Majestic, Google Scholar, and Scimago-Scopus.
Web data was collected in early January, while bibliometric data covered the period 2019–2023. Historically, Webometrics rankings align with other global university rankings. However, Webometrics uniquely provides data for many institutions in Global South countries, which are often not covered by other ranking systems.
For universities, a higher Webometrics ranking reflects global competitiveness in academia and research. The higher the ranking, the greater the recognition of a university’s contributions to widely accessible scientific knowledge.
