Responding to Global Challenges, UNDIP Partners with SenseTime to Develop AI Ecosystem in Indonesia

Beijing, China (April 30, 2025) – In line with its vision of becoming a world-class university and enhancing the quality of education, research, and institutional reputation, Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) continues to build strategic partnerships with global universities and institutions. From April 28 to 30, 2025, UNDIP conducted a key international visit to China aimed at expanding its global network—not only with universities but also with leading tech companies in three major cities: Shanghai, Beijing, and Tianjin.

The UNDIP delegation was led by Rector Prof. Dr. Suharnomo, S.E., M.Si., and Chair of the Board of Trustees Prof. Mohamad Nasir, M.Si, Akt, Ph.D., accompanied by a task force team including Vice Rector IV Wijayanto, Ph.D.; Secretary of Academic Senate Prof. Ir. Agus Indarjo, M.Phil.; Deputy Director of Global Partnerships and Connectivity Pulung Widhi Hari Hananto, S.H.; and Abdul Rohman, S.Hum., Manager of the Directorate of Reputation, Partnerships and Global Connectivity.

The visit focused not only on strengthening academic cooperation but also on exploring potential collaborations with the tech industry. On April 29, the UNDIP delegation had the honor of visiting SenseTime, a leading IT company in China and a notable competitor to DeepSeek. SenseTime is headquartered in Shanghai and operates a representative office in Beijing.

The delegation was warmly welcomed by Manda Mei, AI Ethics and Governance Secretariat at SenseTime. The visit featured a discussion session and focus group dialogue between SenseTime representatives and the UNDIP delegation. Key points included a mutual interest in developing an artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem in Indonesia and exploring joint initiatives in AI-related education and research at the university level.

“Partnerships with global tech companies like SenseTime are a critical step for UNDIP in responding to the challenges of the digital transformation era. This collaboration not only strengthens our research and educational capacity in AI but also aligns with our commitment to producing globally competitive human resources,” said Prof. Dr. Suharnomo.

The visit concluded with a tour of SenseTime’s exhibition center, where the delegation was introduced to various AI-based innovations and technologies developed by the company’s IT team. This visit marks an initial step toward formalizing the collaboration through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) as a concrete form of partnership and benchmarking between UNDIP and SenseTime.
