UNDIP History Study Program Provided Space for Students to Develop Passion in Movie through Historical Cinematography Courses

The Department of History, Faculty of Humanities, Diponegoro University, held a softskill development training with the topic “Sharpening Interests, Talents, and Idealism in the Field of Creative Content” on October 16th 2021 via Zoom.

In his speech, Dr. Dhanang Respati, M. Hum., as the Head of Department of History said that this event was initiated as an effort of the History Study Program to improve the competence and skills of students in the field of creative content. This event is very important, when many people ask about the future of students of History Study Program. The views of this resource person will open the horizons of History students that there are various alternative jobs outside the standard or mainstream that can be explored. The most obvious example is the work as a film producer or videographer as the two speakers, namely Damar Ardi Atmaja, S. S. (Member of Superdelapan Millimeter Foundation / Alumni of History Study Program class of 2001) and Arif Syaefudin, S. Hum. (Videographer of linikini.id / Alumni of History Study Program class of 2012).

The passion for movie in Damar Ardi Atmaja, S. S. started when he joined Undip Chronicle Student Activity Unit in 2001. Through that unit, he met with many friends who have similar passion for the world of movie. In fact, some friends also often collaborated in the process of making the movie until now.

He has produced many documentaries, including NOKAS (2016), Balada Bala Sinema (2017), AUM (2021), Making Up (2021). One of the strengths of the movie is the richness of perspective shown, as depicted in the NOKAS documentary. This movie deals with the tradition of giving dowries to Timorese women, who are to be married. Although this tradition is very common, this movie tries to explore further about the basis for implementing this tradition.

In his presentation, Damar said that there is a link between history and movie, because movies always talk about humans, past events, and culture. However the most important of all is research. Research is fundamental when talking about political issues, both in the New Order era until now. The Research Methods course, which is taught in the History study program, is considered successful in becoming a solid foundation in data processing.

“In college, I learned how to prepare questions for informants, how to make resource persons tell more detailed and in-depth stories. This provision is very important in the process of making films, not only in documentaries, but also in fiction,” he said.

Meanwhile, Arif Syaefudin, S. Hum., shared his experiences about the process of finding passion, which is full of challenges. “There are many desires that must be forced, when I realized that I was interested in videography, I deliberately participated in pre-wedding and wedding events to add to my portfolio. I also registered as a volunteer to add to my network,” said Arief.

He also gave support to the juniors in Undip History Study Program so that they would not be upset when they graduated. “In this digital era, which is developing so flexible, we must be sensitive in capturing the moment. There are so many opportunities that can be taken, to become a content creator, a special script writer for captions, and much more,” he added.
The moderator on this occasion, Noor Naelil Masruroh, S.S., M. Hum., said that the History Study Program has provided space for students to develop their passion in movie through the History Cinematography course. In this course, students learn about both theory and practice in making films with historical dimensions.

“The support of alumni is very much needed, especially in providing information related to internship or work opportunities in the field of creative content,” she concluded. (Linda – Public Relations / Fanada – History)
