UNDIP Diponegoro Theater Became a Thinking Room and a Place for Creativity for Students

“Back in high school, I did not participate in theater but was active in Japanese and English activities which were often collaborated with theater. Speaking of theater, it has a very broad scope, not only about acting, play, writing, stage production, but we also learn about many things,” said Dimas Eriyanto Putro, a student of the Faculty of Law, Diponegoro University, who is the new leader of the Diponegoro Theater Student Activity Unit.

Dimas said the work program that will be carried out by the Diponegoro Theater includes podcasts about theater as well as introducing campus theaters in Undip and outside Undip. During the pandemic, podcasts are very helpful for sharing information about the world of theater. In addition, Diponegoro Theater also plans to hold hybrid performances with strict procedures and restrictions.

“The hope is that apart from online activities, offline activities can be carried out again. Last year’s routine rehearsals were actually carried out online, so there were not many materials available. Hopefully this year the training and performing arts can be done face-to-face so that theater arts would not lose performance spaces even in the midst of a pandemic,” he hoped.

“Many people often bury their feelings because there is something that is difficult to express or tell to others. Theater can be a space for us to vent and express the emotions that we have been hiding. Theater is also a space for thinking, a place for creativity that shapes individuals to be open to change and criticism, educating individuals to appear flexible and able to enter any dimension. Theater is a place for individuals who want to express themselves, develop appreciation skills, engage in creative activities so that individuals will have a sense of self-confidence and independence,” he continued.

“The Diponegoro Theater as an organization has important roles in building soft skills, a means of getting networks or friends, and finding pleasure to share hobbies. Sometimes life often makes us tired, if we don’t have the space to escape from the pressure, the fear can actually make us stressed. Without art, life feels empty, art is life and color so that life is not monotonous. We must use our time wisely by seriously attending the lectures as well as participating in supporting activities or organizations to develop our potential. Meanwhile, education is clearly an important role, we need it as a guide for the future, education will encourage us to grow, to have wider knowledge, and to become responsible individuals,” concluded Dimas.
