Professor of the Faculty of Engineering: Urban Villages, the Main Pillar of Sustainable Settlements

UNDIP – Prof. Dr. Ir. Nany Yuliastuti, M.SP, is a distinguished professor of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning (Departemen Perencanaan Wilayah dan Kota / DPWK), Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Diponegoro, specializing in Urban and Regional Planning. She has dedicated over 42 years as a lecturer. Prof. Nany is known for her high commitment to education, research, and community service, contributing significantly to spatial planning development in Indonesia.

In her speech during the Open Session of Purna Adi Cendekia UNDIP (Thursday, January 16, 2024) titled “Sustainable Urban Villages,” Prof. Nany discussed one of the global agendas of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 11, which emphasizes creating sustainable and livable cities and settlements for all.

Sustainable development focuses on creating inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and settlements. Prof. Nany expressed her interest in urban villages because Semarang City consists of 177 sub-districts, many of which are urban villages.

“If urban villages are linked to Sustainable Development Goal 11, they involve inclusivity, resilience, participation, and a balance between modernity and tradition,” she explained.

“Urban villages can also contribute to SDG Goal 11 by strengthening the sustainability of economic, social, environmental, and positive historical resources,” Prof. Nany added. Urban villages are dense urban settlements primarily inhabited by low-income communities. The independence of urban village communities in managing their housing and environment through mutual cooperation aims to improve the quality of life. Besides being a residential space, urban villages also function as a social and cultural identity, reflecting the community’s adaptability and growth.

Urban villages of interest include Kampung Nelayan Bahari Tambaklorok, Kelurahan Purwosari, Kelurahan Kanalsari, Kelurahan Bugangan, Kelurahan Gayamsari, Kelurahan Lempongsari, Kelurahan Bustaman, Kampung Code Yogyakarta, Kampung Kauman, Kampung Tematik Batik, Kampung Tematik Ranting Pelangi, Kampung Jawi, Kampung Batik Laweyan Surakarta, and Kampung Blangkon Surakarta.

Based on the comparison of the four dimensions of the SDGs—social, economic, environmental, and governance—Prof. Nany highlighted that good governance plays a crucial role in the development of urban villages by increasing community participation, ensuring their sustainability.

In her conclusion, Prof. Nany emphasized the importance of urban villages as a primary element of urban settlements in Indonesia. She suggested that thematic or creative village programs should maximize social conditions, improve community skills, and develop a strong physical, economic, and social environment. Consistent government policies are also essential for the sustainability of urban villages. She further recommended continuing research on urban villages to promote local wisdom and sustainable development.

At the end of her Purna Adi Cendekia speech, Prof. Nany expressed gratitude to all members of UNDIP’s academic community for their cooperation. “I would like to thank the academic community of Universitas Diponegoro, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Department of Urban and Regional Planning for their support throughout my tenure, allowing me to fulfill the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. Now, I can complete my service as a civil servant. May UNDIP continue to excel, uphold its dignity, and bring great benefits in the future,” Prof. Nany concluded. (DHW)
