UNDIP, Semarang (May 30, 2025) – Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) Law Faculty lecturer Pulung Widhi Hananto was among the speakers at the internationally renowned Indonesia Maritime Week 2025, held from May 26–28, 2025, at the Jakarta Convention Center. At this prestigious forum, Pulung emphasized the urgency of climate change mitigation and the need for sustainable integration within maritime law.
Indonesia Maritime Week 2025 is one of the world’s most significant maritime events, serving as a strategic platform that brings together state representatives, leading industry figures, influential business leaders, policymakers, and global innovators. A key goal of the event is to address critical issues in the maritime sector on a multilateral level and foster strategic synergy to advance Indonesia’s naval industry on the global stage.
Across the three-day event, 35 world-class speakers took the stage, including Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Among these prominent figures, Pulung Widhi Hananto stood out as the only academic representative from a university, offering expertise in International Law, the Law of the Sea, and Climate Change.
In his presentation, Pulung highlighted the importance of aligning Indonesia’s maritime law with climate change response strategies. He noted that while Indonesia’s maritime legal framework already contains strong instruments for environmental protection, there is a pressing need for optimization and greater integration with global developments.

He also addressed the regulatory fragmentation and overlaps that continue to hinder the effectiveness of environmental protection and law enforcement in the maritime sector. Pulung called for harmonization among stakeholders to build a fair, firm, and efficient environmental governance system. He further proposed the adoption of more specific regulations (lex specialis) within the framework of sustainable maritime law. “We don’t need to choose the maritime or environment, but we need to protect both,” he asserted.
Pulung’s participation as a speaker at IMW 2025 affirms UNDIP’s role as a university of dignity and impact, contributing meaningfully to both local and global issues. (Public Communication / UNDIP-RPGC / Pulung / Ed. Nurul)
