UNDIP Rector Emphasizes That Downstream Research Must Become Market-Ready Products Benefiting Society

UNDIP, Semarang (26/6) – The Office of Research Commercialization and Business Incubation of Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) officially launched the 2026 Impactful Research Commercialization Kick-Off Meeting, a strategic initiative that reflects the university’s commitment to transforming research into industrial commercialization. The event was held in person at 2:00 p.m. in the Rector’s Meeting Room on the 2nd Floor of the Widya Puraya Building at the UNDIP Tembalang Campus. Designed to strengthen collective commitment among academics and university leaders, the meeting aimed to ensure that priority research commercialization programs deliver innovations with tangible societal benefits.

The Rector of Universitas Diponegoro, Prof. Dr. Suharnomo, S.E., M.Si., expressed strong appreciation for the initiative while providing strategic direction to ensure that research outputs generate significant socio-economic impact. In his remarks, he emphasized the need to shift from “ivory tower” research toward research that is practical, applicable, and solution-oriented. “UNDIP researchers must ensure that the innovations funded through this program do not remain merely academic documents. They must become concrete products ready for market adoption, support the growth of business incubators and startups, and be monitored regularly through measurable impact-oriented commercialization indicators,” he stated.

Addressing the 33 researchers who received funding in 2026, the Rector underscored the importance of accountability and measurable outcomes. “Please uphold this trust responsibly. Our target is clear: the outputs must be measurable. Once the funding is disbursed, the products should not end up stored away after the reports are completed. I want to see your innovations being used in hospitals, consumed by communities, adopted by industry, and contributing to economic growth, particularly in Central Java,” he added.

In his report, Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, Cooperation, and Public Communication Wijayanto, Ph.D., presented the performance of UNDIP’s research portfolio, which successfully secured competitive funding this year. The strategic program involves 33 selected researchers who collectively submitted 36 innovative proposals from various academic disciplines.

Wijayanto, Ph.D., explained the program’s accountability framework and strategic direction. “The 2026 commercialization program manages a total budget of IDR 14.059 billion distributed across six strategic funding schemes: Health and Medical Devices, Food and Nutrition, Marine and Fisheries, Energy and Environment, Artificial Intelligence, and Internet of Things. Our primary focus is strengthening industry partnerships and accelerating the commercialization of research outcomes in real markets.”

The kick-off session continued with a scientific discussion forum featuring leading scholars and researchers who presented their innovation projects. Moderated by Anggun Puspitarini Siswanto, S.T., Ph.D., the session began with a presentation by Prof. Dr. Ir. Rifky Ismail, S.T., M.T., who introduced the development of advanced medical technology through the MyoMES project, further strengthening UNDIP’s health innovation portfolio. In the field of sustainable design and materials engineering, Prof. Dr. Ir. Erni Setyowati, M.T., presented the scientific advantages of the “Hexagonal Echo-Reducing Wall Ceramic for Passive Acoustic Building Systems,” an innovation designed to reduce noise pollution in architectural spaces.

The academic exploration continued with presentations from the functional food and marine technology sectors. Gemala Anjani, S.P., M.Si., Ph.D., showcased her biomedical research on “Herbal-based Gummy Candy Designed to Enhance Children’s Immunity”, offering a preventive health solution for young populations. The interactive discussion concluded with insights from chemical engineering expert Prof. Agus Trianto, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., who outlined strategies for implementing research commercialization programs that can achieve both comparative and competitive advantages in Indonesia’s industrial sector.

Through this Kick-Off Meeting, Universitas Diponegoro reaffirmed its position as a leading research university committed to bridging the gap between academic theory and industrial application. The university will continue accelerating efforts in business incubation, intellectual property protection, and the development of appropriate technologies to support national progress. This academic endeavor reflects the dedication of the entire UNDIP academic community in realizing the vision of “Noble and Valuable UNDIP”—a noble university that delivers meaningful benefits to society through impactful innovation and research.
