Biotechnology of Faculty of Science and Mathematics Undip Provides Research Training to Students of SMA Negeri 4 Semarang

As a form of implementation of Diponegoro University’s program as a research university, Biotechnology Study Program of Faculty of Science and Mathematics Undip provided research training to students of SMA Negeri 4 Semarang on Monday (14/6). This activity is supported by experts in the field of research, namely lecturers in Biotechnology study program and outstanding students from the same study program. The training provided is a basic training as well as a motivation for students of SMA Negeri 4 Semarang in particular to love science and research. The enthusiasm of the students of SMA Negeri 4 Semarang was so high that it could be seen from the number of participants who reached 100 people.

The training activity was opened by remarks from Head of Biotechnology Study Program represented by Secretary of Study Program, namely Dr. Fortune Siti Ferniah, S.Si., M.Sc., or fondly called Mrs. Ferniah. She showed her gratitude for SMA Negeri 4 Semarang and mentioned that this activity was one of the manifestations of the MoU carried out by Biotechnology Study Program and SMA Negeri 4 Semarang. This training will discuss tips related to research and hopefully will provide new knowledge to the students of SMA Negeri 4 Semarang. Mrs. Ferniah said that research does not always have to be conducted in the laboratory. Moreover, during a pandemic like today, more research is being carried out in the field. The hope is that SMA Negeri 4 Semarang and Biotechnology Study Program can develop education in Indonesia by producing excellent graduates, especially in the field of research.

Meanwhile, a representative from SMA Negeri 4 Semarang, Mrs. Ririn Masrikah, advised the students who took part in this training activity to be able to take advantage of the learning opportunities provided as well as possible and to be able to apply the knowledge gained from this activity. Mrs. Ririn Masrikah hopes that students can be involved in research or projects carried out by Biotechnology Study Program so that a love for Biotechnology in particular and Biology in general will grow. She closed her speech with a prayer so that the activity will be successfully held and provide intelligence for the Indonesian nation.

The first speaker, Dr. Sri Pujiyanto, S.Si. M.Si. delivered material related to the stages of research, tips for getting research topics, interesting topics to research, the advantages of participating in research competitions and provides several examples of research participating in national and international research competitions. The next material is conveyed by Dr. Rer.Nat. Anto Budiharjo, S.Si., M. Biotech. He conveyed how one can become a researcher with good quality. Anto Budiharjo also explained the importance of collaboration in research in order to create diversity in the research itself. In addition, researchers must also continue to practice reading, writing and presentation skills. This is certainly inseparable from the need to become a good quality researcher. However, besides working hard to become a good researcher and create research, a researcher is required to maintain physical and spiritual health. Thus, research will not be a burden but a fun activity.

The third material is delivered by one of the outstanding students from Biotechnology Study Program, namely Anand Reyna Maulana. Anand was born in 2000 and entered Biotechnology Study Program in 2018. His achievements in the international world are extraordinary. In 2020, Anand managed to the winner of two gold medals at World Young Inventors Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Global Youth Scientist Challenge, New Delhi, India. Because of his success in the national research competition, Anand would like to share his experience with the students of SMA Negeri 4 Semarang. Anand said that thinking positively and not being afraid to fail are good steps while participating in research competitions. Anand shared that his research experience during the pandemic taught him to be accustomed in adapting to any condition.
