The UNDIP KKN Team Accustomed to a Healthy Lifestyle by Washing Hands with Soap from Used Cooking Oil

SUKOHARJO – Central Java (29/1). Students of Community Service (KKN) Team I of Diponegoro University (Undip) conducted socialization on making hand washing soap from used cooking oil in Baran Village, Nguter District, Sukoharjo Regency. This activity is part of a multidisciplinary KKN work program entitled “Innovation Training on Making Hand Soap from Used Cooking Oil”.

This program aims to raise awareness of PHBS (Clean and Healthy Lifestyle) after the Covid-19 pandemic. Washing hands before and after doing daily activities is very important. With Innovation Training on Making Hand Soap from Used Cooking Oil for the people of Baran Village, it is hoped that the community will be more concerned about awareness of hand washing and as an opportunity to open a home business of hand washing soap from used cooking oil.

In this activity, KKN students conducted innovation training activities in making hand washing soap from used cooking oil to the people of Baran village. The activities started with the presentation of the importance of PHBS (Clean and Healthy Lifestyle) by washing hands before and after activities and followed by the presentation of material for calculating the cost of production. After the presentation, it was continued with the practice of making hand washing soap from used cooking oil and giving the results of processing hand washing soap from used cooking oil to the people of Baran village who attended the activities.

During the training on making hand washing soap from used cooking oil, the Family Welfare Development (PKK) women who attended were enthusiastic. One of the PKK women said that a program like this had never existed before and was very beneficial for the community. “With various kinds of used cooking oil, the KKN students can process it into recycled products that can be useful for all of us, namely hand washing soap,” said one of the PKK members. In addition, she also mentioned the advantages of this soap, which is that it is more economical than ordinary soap because it is made from basic ingredients in the form of waste cooking oil and the manufacturing process is easy because it does not require special tools and skills. “Instead of buying hand soap, we can make it ourselves with relatively affordable production costs and we can practice making it in our own homes,” she continued in an interview with KKN students.

It is hoped that with this program, the people of Baran village will care more about and understand PHBS by washing their hands before and after carrying out activities so that they can increase awareness of healthy living after the Covid-19 pandemic which has an impact on improving the quality of life of the community.
