Semarang, September 26, 2023 – As an effort to preserve the environment and implement the zero waste concept at Poklahsar Mina Asri (Fisheries Processing and Marketing Group), PT. Pertamina Patra Niaga Integrated Terminal Semarang initiated training activities on the utilization of fish smoking waste.
The fish-smoking industry has produced a lot of fish offal and charcoal waste, which often becomes a source of environmental pollution if not managed properly. This waste contains various essential nutrients such as carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium, which can be beneficial for plants if they can be converted into organic fertilizer.
So far, fish-smoking waste in the form of charcoal and fish offal has yet to be appropriately utilized. Khodijah said, “Charcoal waste from smoking fish is still piling up and has no selling value. As for the offal, we process some of it to make food and some of it we throw away,” she said at the beginning of the initiation of the activity.
Septrial Arafat, S.P., M.P., lecturer at the Agroecotechnology Study Program, Faculty of Animal and Agricultural Sciences Undip, as the resource person, explained the POC prototype made from fermented fish offal. It was explained that initially, the fish innards waste still had a fishy smell. After one week, the smell had changed to the smell of fermentation. The changing smell indicates that the POC from fish offal has been successfully decomposed,” he explained when opening the training.
In this training, there are two products from fish offal waste, namely fish offal compost and fish offal POC. These two products are hoped to be able to support the urban farming movement promoted by the Mayor of Semarang, as well as apply the zero waste concept.

“Why should fish offal and charcoal be made into POC and compost? Because this is a request from village officials as an effort to support the urban farming movement in Semarang, as well as seeking greenhouse terraces in coastal areas,” said Aryo, CDO of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Integrated Terminal Semarang.
