Minister Abdul Kadir Karding Inaugurates UNDIP Migrant Center, Expands Access to Global Professional Job Opportunities

UNDIP, Semarang (June 26, 2025) – Indonesian Minister of Migrant Worker Protection (Pelindungan Pekerja Migran Indonesia / P2MI) Abdul Kadir Karding, in collaboration with Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), officially launched the UNDIP Migrant Center—the first center of its kind developed in partnership with a university. The inauguration took place on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at the Prof. Sudarto, S.H. Building on UNDIP’s Tembalang campus. This strategic initiative aims to offer broader access to protection, information services, and overseas job opportunities—not only for UNDIP graduates but also for alumni of universities across Indonesia.

The establishment of the UNDIP Migrant Center was formalized through the signing of a cooperation agreement between UNDIP and the Directorate General of Overseas Employment Promotion and Utilization under the Ministry of Migrant Worker Protection/Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI). The agreement focuses on creating the UNDIP Migrant Center to support the university’s Tri Dharma of higher education mission—education, research, and community service—while providing integrated services to prepare skilled Indonesian migrant workers.

The event also featured an interactive talk show hosted by Fiki Naki, with Minister Karding discussing the theme “Competent Migrants, Safe Migration.” The talk emphasized the importance of seizing international job opportunities through enhanced competency development facilitated by migrant centers.

Minister Karding explained that under the directive of the President of Indonesia, the Ministry of P2MI is prioritizing quality protection for Indonesian migrant workers (PMIs), especially by promoting the placement of skilled workers. This initiative aims to enhance the well-being of PMIs and increase their contributions to the national economy. With the establishment of the UNDIP Migrant Center, students are expected to play a larger role in protecting migrant workers through initiatives such as safe migration education, volunteer literacy programs in migration, finance, and labor law, serving as agents of socio-economic empowerment, and becoming trained, professional, globally competitive prospective migrant workers.

In his remarks, UNDIP Rector Prof. Dr. Suharnomo, S.E., M.Si., highlighted that UNDIP has advanced 101 positions in the QS World University Rankings. “We are now ranked 624 globally, and we aim to break into the top 500 next year. No other university in Indonesia has made such a significant leap. This achievement is the result of outstanding teamwork across our academic community, especially the deans and their teams,” he said.

The Rector also noted that five UNDIP study programs are now ranked among the world’s top 500. He added that UNDIP is among the top universities in terms of the shortest waiting time for graduates to find employment. “When our senior graduates set a high standard, their juniors are motivated to follow suit,” he said.

“The number of unemployed bachelor’s degree holders remains high—currently reaching 635,000. Meanwhile, the number of graduates continues to increase each year. The initiative launched by the Ministry of P2MI is extraordinary—not only for UNDIP but for Indonesia as a whole. It opens vast new opportunities, as the job market extends beyond national borders to include global professional fields,” Prof. Suharnomo added.

The Migrant Center offers an integrated system to prepare PMIs in terms of competencies, language skills, cultural adaptation, health, and mental readiness. The center provides services that include job opportunity information, overseas career interest mapping, training in vocational skills, foreign languages, soft skills, and financial literacy, as well as competency certification and job matching and placement services.

The UNDIP Migrant Center is located at the UNDIP’s Vocational School and is managed by a professional and experienced team. (Public Communication / UNDIP / Ut)
