UNDIP, Pemalang (December 24, 2025) – Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), together with the Pemalang Regency Government, has inaugurated a water desalination facility in the coastal area of Pemalang Regency on Wednesday (24/12/2025). The facility, located in Blendung Village and Kaliprau Village, Ulujami District, was established as a joint effort to improve access to clean water for coastal communities that have long faced limited sources of potable water.
The desalination facility processes brackish water into drinking water that is safe for consumption. The installed desalination machine has a production capacity of around 200 gallons per day and is now available for community use. The presence of this facility is expected to reduce dependence on water supplies from other areas, especially during the dry season.
The inauguration of this desalination facility also strengthens the partnership between UNDIP and the Pemalang Regency Government. This collaboration was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the UNDIP Rector and the Regent of Pemalang, which outlined synergies in education, research, and community service through the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education to support improvements in public services and regional development.
For Universitas Diponegoro, involvement in developing this water desalination facility represents a tangible contribution of the university in providing research-based solutions that can be directly felt by communities, especially those in coastal areas.
UNDIP Rector Prof. Dr. Suharnomo, S.E., M.Si., stated that collaboration between universities and local governments is key to addressing fundamental issues in society. Through this partnership, UNDIP seeks to ensure that research results and innovations developed on campus can be applied in real and sustainable ways. “Hopefully, we can continue to expand this collaboration and truly assist the community, particularly in meeting clean water needs in coastal areas,” he said.
Meanwhile, Pemalang Regent Anom Widyantoro, S.E., M.M., expressed his appreciation for the cooperation established with UNDIP. He sees the presence of this desalination facility as an important step toward improving the quality of life for coastal communities, while also opening the door to developing similar facilities in other villages in need. “We have tested the desalinated water, and its quality is excellent and safe for consumption. In the future, we will encourage the expansion of this technology to other regions,” he remarked.
Through this collaboration, UNDIP and the Pemalang Regency Government hope the established partnership will continue to grow and generate more programs that have a direct impact on community welfare. (Public Communication/UNDIP/Hng)
