UNDIP Thematic Community Service Students Accompany MSMEs in Using Digital Marketing

Pemalang (05/08/23) – Diponegoro University (Undip) Thematic Community Service Lecture (KKN) students invited Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) actors in Klareyan Village, Petarukan District, Pemalang Regency to carry out digitalization to improve business branding. Mentoring activities are carried out by introducing digital marketing as a medium for marketing products owned by MSME actors.

Digital Marketing is a marketing or promotional activity for a brand, product, or service via the internet or online media. Marketing methods using digital marketing have a return on investment or ROI, which is relatively high. Digital marketing aims to attract consumers quickly and increase visibility in its use.

There are quite a lot of MSME actors in Klareyan village. In one village with a population of almost 14,000, divided into 4 sub-villages, more than 40 MSMEs operate in the clothing, food, and service sectors. However, terms of digital marketing, it still needs to be improved because there are still many MSMEs that still need to utilize social media or e-commerce to market their products. Therefore, Uzma Syarifatul Muna Salsabilla, an Undip Thematic Community Service student in 2023 from the Industrial Chemical Engineering Technology study program, assists in using digital marketing to MSMEs in Klareyan Village. Apart from assistance, the student team also provides a digital marketing booklet containing the first steps to starting digital marketing, how to manage social media or e-commerce, and strategies for carrying out digital marketing, which is used as a guide in branding MSMEs digitally.

Mr. Eko, the owner of the Instant Ginger MSME “Sidalang Jaka” in Klareyan Village, said, “My business experienced a fairly drastic decline in sales because instant ginger drinks were in great demand when Covid was at its peak, but when the Covid outbreak subsided, this drink started to be abandoned. My instant ginger drink cannot compete with other herbal drinks sold through online media, while my products are only sold through the neighborhood.” We then took the initiative to create social media and e-commerce accounts for these MSMEs. Next, we also teach how to create exciting product posts and descriptions to upload on social media or e-commerce. “I have always wanted to create an Instagram or e-commerce for my sales, but I didn’t know how to start and run it, so I was pleased when Undip students helped me to register and gave me strategies to sell this product online,” said Mr. Eko when we visited the Instant Ginger MSME “Sidalang Jaka.”

Through this activity, it is hoped that MSME players in Klareyan Village can continue to develop digitally to improve branding and broaden their target market. This program is also expected to benefit the people of Klareyan Village to support the economy.
