Producing Competent Graduates of Engineering, the Faculty of Engineering UNDIP Held a Public Lecture on Career Development in the EPC Field

Wednesday, October 25, 2023. The Faculty of Engineering Undip held a Public Lecture entitled “Career Development for Engineering Bachelors in the Field of EPC (Engineering Procurement and Construction).” This event was held in a hybrid manner in the 4th Floor Theater Room, Faculty of Engineering Undip, and this event was also held online using Zoom and live streaming on the Undip TV Youtube channel. The public lecture was opened with remarks by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Undip, Prof. Ir. M. Agung Wibowo, M.M., M.Sc., Ph.D.

This public lecture event presented two professional speakers. The first speaker was Prof. Dr. Ir. Purwanto, DEA, Chair of the Green Technology Research Center and Professor at the Faculty of Engineering Undip. The second speaker was Mochamad Ichsan, Senior Vice President Head of EPC Division PT. PP (Persero) Tbk. Also present was the Professor of the Faculty of Engineering Undip, Prof. Dr. Mohamad Djoeni, S.T., M.Eng., as moderator in this public lecture.

According to Mochamad Ichsan, EPC is a unique field where when working on a project, an expert is required to be an engineer, be a procurement officer, be able to construct buildings and be able to prove whether the design is successful or not. Therefore, EPC requires collaboration between other scientific fields.

“To face the world of work, students must continue to strive to create innovations continuously so that they are not left behind and are able to compete, in accordance with the way EPC works,” said Senior Vice President Head of EPC PT. the PP.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Purwanto expressed his concern for graduates who do not yet know the job prospects in the field of science they are pursuing; for this reason, it is vital to introduce students to what EPC is.

“80% of students who were asked after graduating wanted to work straight away, 5% would continue their studies, and 0 would be entrepreneurs. Most students who were asked wanted to work in the industrial sector, namely oil and gas and food, but when asked to name 5 industrial companies, they could not. Students’ knowledge about careers is still lacking,” said Prof Purwanto.

The discussion between the speakers and the students present went smoothly and was very interactive. This public lecture closed with a closing statement from the Moderator regarding the importance of competent skills for engineering graduates, especially in the field of EPC work.

“Students must have skills that are competent, clever and brave and must be supplemented with a competency certificate so that their skills are recognized. Having a career in EPC has great potential and is a new challenge for millennials because EPC must be responsible for a project from start to finish. For this, it requires a combination of many scientific disciplines,” concluded Prof. Mohamad Djoeni. (Sudanta, Bobby – Public Relations)
