From Furniture Laborer to Outstanding Graduate: The Story of Muhammad Khoiri, a Portrait of Perseverance and Integrity of a UNDIP Student

UNDIP, Semarang (October 13, 2025) – Behind the graduation gown and proud smile of Universitas Diponegoro’s 179th graduation ceremony lies an extraordinary story of perseverance. Muhammad Khoiri, a graduate of Governance Science at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) UNDIP, successfully earned his degree cum laude with a GPA of 3.94. His life journey—marked by struggle, patience, and integrity—teaches the true meaning of resilience and redefines achievement as not merely academic excellence but also as real contribution to society and entrepreneurship.

Khoiri’s journey began from a challenging starting point. After failing to get into university in 2019, he decided to work in a factory while saving money and studying independently. “I learned patience and perseverance. The following year, I was accepted into UNDIP through the UTBK selection—my first-choice university,” he recalled.

That gap year became a turning point that shaped his endurance and determination. During his 4 years and 9 months of study, Khoiri balanced his time between classes, organizations, competitions, and part-time jobs. He once worked as a furniture laborer, event rental operator, and research assistant. “I believe victory comes from preparation. Every achievement is a responsibility, not just a celebration,” he said. He led five interregional and campus organizations, was active in UNDIP’s Student Executive Board (BEM) and student associations, and consistently achieved success at the national level.

His accomplishments span multiple fields—from scientific essay competitions and public speaking to being crowned Troso Weaving Ambassador. He also won 1st Place in the RISTEK UNNES Podcast Competition and the Islamic Public Speaking INSANI UNDIP. Despite financial challenges, he turned competitions and creative works into a means of self-affirmation. “If I only studied without achievements, what could I be proud of?” he said.

Now holding his bachelor’s degree, Khoiri has chosen a flexible career path as a freelance data analyst and research assistant. In his hometown, he has started a snack and fashion business with his friends—creating job opportunities not only for himself but also for his community. “For me, work isn’t just about salary, but about having space to grow and contribute. I want to bring UNDIP’s spirit to the community—so others can truly feel the knowledge I gained,” he expressed.

His spirit aligns with SDGs Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. Khoiri not only enhanced his skills and knowledge through education but also demonstrated entrepreneurship that promotes inclusive and sustainable local economic growth.

To him, UNDIP is more than a university—it’s a kawah candradimuka, a crucible of transformation. “Here, I was forged not only academically but also in leadership, resilience, and networking,” he said. He believes that knowledge must be followed by action and that actual achievement should create impact. To be noble means to uphold integrity; to be valuable means to give back knowledge to society; to be impactful means to create works that benefit many.

Khoiri also emphasized the importance of students being active in three key areas: scientific publication, international collaboration, and genuine innovation for society. “If every student dares to create and reach global forums, then the vision of becoming a World-Class University will not just be a slogan—it will become reality,” he asserted.

He hopes to pass on the spirit of resilience to his juniors—encouraging them not to fear failure, because from failure comes the foundation of greater success.

Khoiri closed the conversation with a simple yet meaningful reflection. “Every step I take, I want to make UNDIP proud—not only on campus but also among the people who benefit from what I do. That’s the true meaning of Noble and Valuable UNDIP.”

As an inspiring graduate, Muhammad Khoiri represents not only academic excellence but also a deep sense of purpose and contribution—embodying the spirit of “Diktisaintek Berdampak.” From the factory floor to the stage of achievement, he has proven that integrity, hard work, and courage to try can truly change one’s destiny. Once again, UNDIP has produced a graduate who is not only globally competitive but also makes a tangible impact on society. (Public Communication/UNDIP/DHW)
