UNDIP, Jepara (3/9) — The Doctoral Program in Science and Mathematics (DSM), Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSM), Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), strengthened its international network through an Adjunct Professor program in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Carrying the theme “Hollow Fiber Technology for Separation and Waste Treatment,” the program was held from August 29 to September 3, 2026. It featured Prof. Mohd Hafiz Ottman, Ph.D., from UTM, an academic with an extensive international research track record and an h-index of 88.
The program involved the DSM Doctoral Program and the Department of Chemistry at FSM UNDIP in a series of activities covering education, research, scientific publication, postgraduate management, and membrane technology development.
One of the main activities was a training session for FSM UNDIP journal editors, attended by editors from various academic disciplines. The chemistry field was represented by editors of “Jurnal Kimia Sains dan Aplikasi and Greensphere”, biology by editors of Anfis, mathematics by editors of JFMA, and statistics by editors of Gaussian.
Academic collaboration was also carried out through joint supervision for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students. Prof. Hafiz provided feedback on students’ research and reviewed manuscripts prepared for publication.
At least seven manuscripts by students and lecturers, particularly doctoral students, were considered ready for submission after receiving reviews and improvements from the UTM expert.
In addition to research activities, Prof. Hafiz’s experience as Dean of the UTM School of Graduate Studies was utilized to provide training and discussions on the management of master’s and doctoral study programs. The study program managers showed strong enthusiasm throughout the sessions.
The program also featured a public lecture attended by approximately 220 participants, including undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, as well as lecturers from the Department of Chemistry, FSM UNDIP.
The public lecture was opened by the Dean of FSM UNDIP, Prof. Dr. Kusworo Adi. Prof. Adi Darmawan, Ph.D., Head of the Chemistry Study Program and a program partner, also delivered welcoming remarks.
Meanwhile, the Chair of the Organizing Committee and Head of the Doctoral Program in Science and Mathematics (DSM), FSM UNDIP, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Cholid Djunaidi, S.Si., M.Si., emphasized the importance of building international networks with globally reputable universities.
“It is only appropriate that the Doctoral Program in Science and Mathematics strengthen its international network with a leading global university such as UTM Malaysia. UTM holds a very strong position in the QS World University Rankings and is well suited to become a strategic partner. Moreover, Prof. Hafiz has a very high h-index of 88,” said Prof. Cholid.

According to him, the international collaboration developed by DSM should not be limited to academic activities. Still, it should also produce joint research, international publications, joint supervision, innovation development, and improvements in the quality of human resources.
The commitment to cooperation was further strengthened through the signing of an Implementation Agreement (IA) between the Doctoral Program in Science and Mathematics (DSM), the Chemistry Study Program, FSM UNDIP, and UTM Malaysia.
UTM representative Prof. Mohd Hafiz Ottman, Ph.D., and the Dean of FSM UNDIP, Prof. Dr. Kusworo Adi, signed the agreement.
The IA is expected to serve as a foundation for more concrete and sustainable collaboration, particularly in the fields of education, research, publication, and technology development.
Hollow Fiber Workshop for Waste Treatment
One of the flagship activities was a hollow fiber fabrication workshop. The workshop was conducted in collaboration with the MerCy Laboratory, led by Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Heru Susanto, M.Si., under UNDIP’s Integrated Laboratory, headed by Dr. Titik, M.Sc.
During the workshop, participants gained hands-on experience producing catalyst-supported membranes in both flat and hollow-fiber forms.
This technology has strong potential for various applications, particularly in separation technology and waste treatment. In addition, the developed membranes have potential applications in the healthcare sector, including hemodialysis.
Flat membrane production was carried out at the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory of the Department of Chemistry, FSM UNDIP. At the same time, the development of hollow fibers became an important part of strengthening research in membrane technology through collaboration with UTM.
The Adjunct Professor program involved lecturers from the Doctoral Program in Science and Mathematics and the Department of Chemistry at FSM UNDIP, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration in the development of science, technology, education, and research.
Through this program, the Doctoral Program in Science and Mathematics, FSM UNDIP, aims to sustain its collaboration with UTM through joint research, joint publications, joint supervision, academic exchange, and the development of membrane technologies that benefit society.
