Public Lecture by Master of Communication Science UNDIP Raised a Theme “The Dilemma of the Mass Media Industry in Indonesia in the Digital Age”

Master of Communication Science, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Diponegoro University held a public lecture with Hellena Yoranita Sousia, Ph.D. (Multiplan Journalist at Australian Broadcasting Corporation Australia) with the theme “The Dilemma of the Mass Media Industry in Indonesia in the Digital Age”, Wednesday (3/5) at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Undip Tembalang.

In her material, Hellena discussed journalism in Indonesia, according to her, media ownership is highly concentrated in Indonesia, with several powerful conglomerates controlling the majority of the media and practicing media convergence. This concentration of ownership creates a limited diversity of views and opinions within the media landscape. She also explained the role of the state in the current and future Indonesian media landscape, changes in rules and regulations, the implications of changes in the Indonesian media landscape for the industry, the press (journalism practices), as well as digital shifts, trends, platforms, challenges, and how they affect journalism and us, and what will happen in the future.

“Digital media outlets have emerged as both a challenge to ownership concentration and an accelerator for stronger media concentration. Internet and digital media outlets are trending but journalism may face some challenges because of how news will be delivered and produced. There are threats as well as opportunities for the public in this digital era,” she concluded. (LW-Public Relations)
