Hundreds of Teluk Awur Village Residents Receive Free Medical Treatment from Universitas Diponegoro

UNDIP Jepara, Saturday (30/11) – Residents of Teluk Awur, Jepara, gathered at the Science and Techno Park Directorate Campus (DSTP), better known as UNDIP Campus in Jepara, located in Teluk Awur Village, Tahunan District, Jepara Regency, Jawa Tengah Province.

A total of 320 residents, primarily women and the elderly, took advantage of free early-detection screenings for non-communicable diseases provided by the Institute of Research and Community Service (Lembaga Penelitian dan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat / LPPM) of Universitas Diponegoro.

This community service program, led by LPPM UNDIP under Field IV, collaborated with UNDIP Jepara Campus and Tahunan Community Health Center in Jepara Regency as part of UNDIP’s commitment to implementing the spirit of “UNDIP Bermartabat, UNDIP Bermanfaat” (Dignified UNDIP, Beneficial UNDIP).

Vice Rector IV UNDIP, Wijayanto, S.IP., M.Si., Ph.D., who inaugurated the event, stated that the activity was intentionally held at the Jepara campus to establish it as a model and a unique characteristic of UNDIP as one of the few campuses in Indonesia with a coastal location.

“Free medical check-ups and treatments for the community around the campus are a tangible form of Universitas Diponegoro’s commitment to implementing the spirit of Dignified UNDIP, Beneficial UNDIP, as always emphasized by UNDIP Rector Prof. Suharnomo,” he added.

At the same event, LPPM Chair Prof. Dr. Ing. Ir. Suherman, S.T., M.T., and his deputy, dr. Achmad Zulfa Juniarto, M.Si.Med., Sp.And(K)., M.M.R., Ph.D., explained that residents received anthropometric examinations, including height and weight measurements, blood pressure checks, and blood tests to determine cholesterol, uric acid, and blood sugar levels. The service concluded with medical consultations, free medication, and complimentary souvenirs.

Dr. Zulfa noted that this community service was thematic, as the team not only provided health check-ups but also collected health records that could be used for scientific research. From the collected data, UNDIP could monitor stunting rates, elderly health, and trends in non-communicable diseases in Teluk Awur Village. This data could then form the basis for future community service programs.

A resident named Sulasih, 67, shared that she learned about the event from the local health center and invited her neighbors to attend. “This activity is excellent. It was my first time getting a health check, and I found out my blood sugar and cholesterol levels were high. The doctor advised me to maintain a healthy diet and take the prescribed medication,” said Sulasih with a joyful expression.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Widiasa, S.T., M.T., the manager of DSTP UNDIP Jepara Campus, expressed his enthusiasm for the event. He added that this activity was part of a series of community service programs UNDIP dedicated to the people of Teluk Awur.

Previously, UNDIP had organized other community services, such as distributing 2 tons of fish and providing free clean water, which is ongoing. The clean water, derived from seawater desalination technology, transforms seawater into potable water. Currently, Teluk Awur residents utilize 200,000 liters of clean water daily.

The LPPM UNDIP community service program is conducted three times a year in various areas of Jawa Tengah, focusing primarily on coastal and mountainous regions. (NH & DHW)
