UNDIP, Semarang (May 20, 2025) – In the spirit of rekindling the values of struggle and unity, Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) held a solemn flag-raising ceremony to commemorate the 117th National Awakening Day (Hari Kebangkitan Nasional) on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at the Widya Puraya Field, UNDIP Tembalang Campus.
The ceremony, held under the national theme “Rise Together to Realize a Strong Indonesia,” served as a moment of reflection for the UNDIP academic community to reaffirm their sense of nationalism and commitment to contributing meaningfully to the nation.
UNDIP Rector Prof. Dr. Suharnomo, S.E., M.Si., who served as the ceremony’s inspector, delivered the official address from Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Hj. Meutya Viada Hafid, B.Eng., M.IP. In her speech, titled “Toward a Modest, Inclusive, and Sustainable National Awakening,” Minister Meutya called on the public to view the National Awakening Day not merely as a historical commemoration but as an opportunity to reignite the spirit of unity and courage that laid the foundation for the Budi Utomo organization 117 years ago.
“We are reopening a crucial chapter in the history of our national struggle—a chapter written not with ordinary ink, but with awakened consciousness, the spirit of unity, and the bravery to resist colonialism,” Minister Meutya said.
She also emphasized the importance of building national self-reliance in the face of globalization and geopolitical polarization. Indonesia, she said, must continue to position itself as a trusted partner in international forums—freely asserting its national interests while actively engaging in productive dialogue.
In the context of digital transformation, the government is strengthening local talent through vocational training and partnerships with industry. One example is the development of an AI Centre of Excellence in Papua, underscoring the government’s commitment to inclusive, human-centered, and socially just digital transformation for a sustainable future.

In a special message to the UNDIP community, UNDIP Rector Prof. Suharnomo urged that the spirit of national awakening be translated into concrete actions by all members of the university. “With the spirit of the 117th National Awakening Day, we want UNDIP to rise and become a leader in development in Jawa Tengah—and number one in making a real contribution to the nation,” he said passionately.
Prof. Suharnomo also called on the entire campus community to strengthen cross-disciplinary collaboration, encourage innovation, and foster closer relationships with industry and professional associations. He stressed that the active role of universities is critical in advancing both the region and the nation.
“Let us test our courage. The knowledge we hold must bring broad benefits to society. Universities cannot stand alone—we must become strategic partners in the industry. Therefore, it is essential for us to uphold academic dignity and continuously adapt to the times,” he added.
The occasion was a meaningful reminder of the importance of cross-sector collaboration in building a resilient and sustainable Indonesia. UNDIP, he said, must position itself as a progressive academic force capable of offering real-world solutions. The spirit of national awakening should be reflected in impactful education, research, and community service that truly benefit the public.
“Let us embrace this extraordinary opportunity with dignity, upholding our intellectual pride. It is time we become hosts in our land, here in Jawa Tengah and throughout Indonesia, through real and meaningful contributions,” the Rector affirmed.
The ceremony concluded with spirited renditions of patriotic songs sung by university leaders, faculty members, administrative staff, and students from various faculties and schools across UNDIP. A joint prayer was offered for the nation’s safety and continued progress.
The commemoration served as a poignant reminder that Indonesia’s long journey as a nation has been shaped by unity and struggle. As a higher education institution, UNDIP reaffirms its commitment to remaining a progressive and solution-oriented academic force in the pursuit of a strong, just, and dignified Indonesia.
