UNDIP, Semarang (December 16, 2025) – Universitas Diponegoro’s (UNDIP) commitment to developing a sustainable campus has earned prestigious recognition in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2025. UNDIP ranked 2nd nationally among the most sustainable universities in Indonesia, 4th in Asia, and 23rd globally.
The award was presented directly to the Rector of UNDIP, Prof. Dr. Suharnomo, S.E., M.Si., at the peak event of the UI GreenMetric Indonesia Awarding 2025, held at the Muladi Dome Multipurpose Building, UNDIP Tembalang Campus, on Tuesday, December 16, 2025. The event was attended by the Minister of Environment/Head of the Environmental Control Agency, Dr. Hanif Faisol Nurofiq; the Vice Governor of Central Java, H. Taj Yasin Maimoen; the Director of Institutional Affairs of Diktisaintek, Prof. Dr. Mukhamad Najib, S.TP., M.M.; rectors from various universities across Indonesia; and other guests.
In addition, as the host institution, UNDIP also won three awards in leading categories, namely:
- Most Sustainable University in Indonesia in the Field of Energy and Climate Change
- Most Sustainable University in Indonesia in the Field of Transportation
- Most Sustainable University in Indonesia in the Field of Education and Research
In an interview after the event, UNDIP Rector, Prof. Dr. Suharnomo, S.E., M.Si., stated that the achievement carries meaning beyond rankings alone.
“Achieving second place nationally is certainly something to be proud of, but what is far more important is how sustainability is truly implemented and felt. UI GreenMetric does not only assess numbers, but also how we manage the campus—from waste management and environmental initiatives to energy efficiency, solar panels, and transportation systems and infrastructure. Alhamdulillah, UNDIP has also continued to improve its quality globally, moving from 26th place in 2024 to 23rd in the world in 2025, and winning first place in three major categories. This achievement is the result of the collective efforts of the entire Universitas Diponegoro community,” he said.
Meanwhile, responding to this achievement, Vice Rector IV for Research, Innovation, Cooperation, and Public Communication, Wijayanto, S.IP., M.Si., Ph.D., remarked, “This award reflects UNDIP’s strong commitment to building an energy-efficient campus, being progressive in waste management, improving transportation systems, developing environmentally friendly infrastructure, and being supported by high-quality research. In the future, UNDIP will continue to enhance its performance across all ranking aspects so that the academic community and the wider society can increasingly feel the benefits.”
Furthermore, Director of Reputation, Partnership, and Global Connectivity of UNDIP, Prof. Dr. Ir. Hadiyanto, S.T., M.Sc., IPU, stated that this achievement is the result of collective efforts from all faculties and schools at UNDIP. “We are certainly very pleased with UNDIP’s achievement in UI GreenMetric 2025, which maintained 2nd place nationally as well as 4th in Asia and 23rd globally as a green and sustainable campus, as reflected in the total UI GreenMetric score obtained. This year, we also achieved maximum results by winning awards in three indicators: transportation, energy–climate, and education,” he explained.
He added that this achievement was made possible by the support of UNDIP’s faculties and schools. However, continued improvement is still needed in several indicators, such as water management and infrastructure, through innovative water conservation and recycling programs to enhance them further.
At the event, it was also noted that 100 universities were included in the rankings. The top 10 universities are: Universitas Indonesia (UI) in first place, followed by Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) in second place, then Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad), and UIN Raden Intan Lampung.
For information, the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings is an international ranking initiative launched by Universitas Indonesia in 2010. The ranking assesses universities’ commitment and performance across six leading indicators: setting and infrastructure; energy and climate change; waste management; water management; transportation systems; and education and research.
Through this achievement, UNDIP further strengthens its role as a noble and valuable university—one that excels not only academically but also consistently delivers tangible contributions in supporting sustainable development and climate change mitigation at both national and global levels.
