UNDIP, Semarang (25/1) – The 31st Team of KKNT UNDIP (Thematic Community Service of Universitas Diponegoro) carried out activities to develop and improve green infrastructure for domestic wastewater disposal at Mardi Utomo Social Service Center (PPS Mardi Utomo) on January 20–21, 2026, in collaboration with the shelter management and residents.
This activity is part of the Thematic Community Service Program (KKN-T) of UNDIP, which focuses on sustainable wastewater management to support the long-term optimization of food-related wastewater treatment. The installation of a grease trap is intended to separate oils, fats, and food residues from wastewater before it is discharged into drainage systems. Kitchen wastewater from cooking activities can clog pipes and degrade environmental quality if not properly managed.
The program was implemented collaboratively, starting with an assessment of existing conditions, selecting strategic locations for installation, and installing grease traps in the public kitchen sinks. The students also provided brief explanations and socialized with the residents about the function of grease traps and how to maintain them to ensure the system operates effectively in the long term.

According to Mr. Harinto, one of the shelter administrators, this program is highly beneficial in improving the quality of the shelter’s kitchen facilities and supporting cleanliness and health within the shelter area. By applying a green infrastructure concept, the initiative is expected to support safer, more effective food preparation processes for beneficiaries.
The Field Supervising Lecturer, Prof. Dr. Ir. Erni Setyowati, M.T., stated that this activity represents a tangible contribution by students to the provision of sustainable infrastructure. “This program is expected to support long-term kitchen waste management, particularly in institutional environments, thereby creating a healthier environment,” she said.
This program is a concrete implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, specifically in the area of community service, through the development and enhancement of sustainable infrastructure. Through the KKN-T program, Universitas Diponegoro continues to demonstrate its commitment to delivering direct solutions to environmental and social issues in support of sustainability.
The grease trap installation aligns with efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), by promoting more environmentally friendly and sustainable household waste management.
Through this initiative, Universitas Diponegoro reaffirms its commitment to delivering science-based, practical solutions for the community, embodying the values “Noble and Valuable UNDIP” and supporting an impact-driven campus. (Public Communication/UNDIP/Erni Setyowati, ed. Nurul)
