UNDIP, Semarang (7/3) – Daytime drowsiness during fasting is a common experience for many people. This phenomenon usually occurs due to changes in sleep patterns caused by suhoor activities and nighttime worship during Ramadan. However, with proper sleep management and a balanced diet, excessive sleepiness can be minimized. A lecturer in Nursing Science at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Diponegoro, Nisa Nur Hasanah, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., explained that irregular sleep patterns often trigger drowsiness during fasting.
“Avoid staying up late after Tarawih prayers. Ideally, we should still get enough sleep, around 6 to 8 hours each day. If possible, try to go to bed around 9 PM so the body remains refreshed when waking up for suhoor,” she explained.
In addition to maintaining nighttime sleep, she suggested using rest time during the day with short naps or power naps. A nap of 15 to 20 minutes is sufficient to help restore energy. “A short nap is enough to help the body recover, so we can continue our activities with better focus,” she added.
Another important factor is paying attention to food intake during suhoor. Nisa advised against consuming excessive carbohydrates, as they can trigger drowsiness more quickly. “Pay attention to the nutritional composition during suhoor. Avoid consuming too many carbohydrates because it can make you feel sleepy faster,” she said.
By maintaining proper sleep patterns, utilizing rest time effectively, and managing nutritional intake during suhoor, fasting can be observed more comfortably and productively.
“Getting enough sleep helps the body stay fit, allowing us to perform fasting with greater focus and devotion,” she concluded. (Public Communication/UNDIP/Faculty of Medicine Team, adapted from FK UNDIP’s Official Instagram)
