UNDIP, Semarang – Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) has once again achieved a significant milestone on the international stage. In the QS World University Rankings (WUR) by Subject 2026, UNDIP recorded a notable improvement, with 10 subject areas ranked globally, an increase of four subjects compared to the previous year.
Overall, QS WUR by Subject 2026 evaluated 6,277 institutions worldwide, of which 1,912 met the criteria for publication across various subject categories. The ranking covers 55 academic disciplines across 166 countries. This achievement highlights UNDIP’s commitment to strengthening academic quality and research across disciplines, while expanding its international recognition as part of its transformation into a World Class University (WCU).
Of the 10 ranked subjects, five entered the Top 500 globally, demonstrating UNDIP’s growing competitiveness internationally. These include:
- Petroleum Engineering (rank 151–175, new)
- Law (rank 251–300)
- Engineering – Chemical (rank 401–450, new)
- Agriculture & Forestry (rank 401–475)
- Social Sciences & Management (rank 451–500)
In addition, the following subjects were also ranked globally:
- Arts & Humanities (rank 501–550, new)
- Engineering & Technology (rank 501–550, new)
- Economics & Econometrics (rank 501–550)
- Business & Management Studies (rank 551–600)
- Medicine (rank 701–850)
The Rector of UNDIP, Prof. Dr. Suharnomo, S.E., M.Si., stated that this achievement is the result of collective efforts by the entire UNDIP academic community in continuously strengthening academic quality and global reputation. “The increase in the number of subjects ranked in QS WUR by Subject 2026 shows that UNDIP is becoming more competitive internationally. This achievement is not merely about rankings, but about our consistency in improving education quality, research, and delivering tangible contributions to society,” he said.
Prof. Suharnomo further emphasized that UNDIP will continue to promote global collaboration, strengthen flagship research, and internationalize academic programs as key strategies toward becoming a world-class university. He also expressed appreciation to vice rectors, faculty and school leaders, and the entire academic community for their dedication.
Meanwhile, the Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, Cooperation, and Public Communication, Wijayanto, S.IP., M.Si., Ph.D., described this achievement as a “historic milestone” for UNDIP.
“For the first time since the university was established, we have successfully placed 10 subjects in QS rankings, with some even reaching the top 100 range. This success demonstrates that UNDIP is becoming more adaptive and competitive within the global higher education ecosystem,” he explained.
He added that UNDIP will continue strengthening interdisciplinary synergy and global partnerships to ensure sustainable progress.
Similarly, the Director of Reputation, Partnership, and Global Connectivity, Prof. Dr. Ir. Hadiyanto, S.T., M.Sc., IPU, noted that this achievement is supported by UNDIP’s strategy to expand international networks and increase academic visibility. He explained that QS rankings by subject use five key indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper, H-index, and international research networks. While each subject has different weightings, academic reputation typically carries the largest weight (30–50%).
“We consistently strengthen international partnerships, increase reputable publications, and promote cross-country research collaboration. The addition of four new subjects indicates that these efforts are beginning to have a significant impact on UNDIP’s global reputation. The inclusion of petroleum engineering, for instance, is supported by strong graduate programs in energy, alumni working in oil and gas companies, and robust international research collaborations,” he explained.
Looking ahead, UNDIP will focus on strengthening strategic fields to increase both the number of subjects ranked and their positions within the Top 500 globally. “We hope that having 10 subjects ranked will also contribute to improving UNDIP’s position in the QS WUR 2027, which will be released in June 2026,” Prof. Hadiyanto added.
This success is inseparable from the contributions of the entire UNDIP academic community, including university leaders, lecturers, researchers, students, administrative staff, and alumni, who continue to collaborate in enhancing the quality of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education.
Moving forward, UNDIP remains optimistic about increasing the number of subjects ranked in QS WUR by Subject while expanding its presence in the Top 500 through strengthened research—especially interdisciplinary and impactful research—global collaboration, and innovation that benefits society.
This commitment aligns with UNDIP’s efforts to support the national agenda of impactful higher education, science, and technology, while upholding the spirit of “Noble and Valuable UNDIP”. (Public Communication/UNDIP/Directorate of Media Networks, Community, and Public Communication)
