UNDIP, Semarang (13/7) – An Indonesian academic has achieved a remarkable accomplishment on the international stage. Dr. Choirul Anam, M.Si., F.Med., a lecturer and researcher from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSM), Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), has made a major leap in the global ranking of scientists published by ScholarGPS, an academic database platform.
In its latest five-year report, with data through 2025, Dr. Anam ranked 48th worldwide in computed tomography (CT). This represents a significant leap from the previous report, which covered data through 2024, when he was ranked 99th in the world.
Joining the Ranks of Global CT Scan Pioneers
The ranking published by ScholarGPS is interdisciplinary. It includes researchers from around the world whose research and development activities focus on CT scan technology, ranging from radiology and oncology specialists in medicine and health sciences to biomedical and computer engineering researchers, as well as mathematicians and physicists.
Breaking into the global top 50, Dr. Anam is alongside leading experts and pioneers in medical imaging technology. Among them are prominent figures such as Prof. Cynthia McCollough of Mayo Clinic (United States), Prof. Joël Greffier (France), Prof. John Damilakis (Greece), and Prof. Madan Rehani (United States). As an Indonesian representative competing at this elite level, Dr. Anam’s achievement demonstrates that the quality of research produced by Indonesian scholars can rival that of major institutions worldwide.
Dr. Anam’s research focuses on developing automated radiation dosimetry software and optimizing image quality in CT scans. Through his innovations, CT scan examinations are expected to become safer by minimizing patients’ radiation exposure while still producing highly detailed clinical images to support accurate medical diagnoses.
The Impact of Dr. Anam’s Innovations on Healthcare
Dr. Choirul Anam’s innovations and research findings in CT scan technology have a fundamental and direct impact on improving the quality of healthcare services. By focusing on the automation of radiation dosimetry, his research enables more measurable, efficient, and precisely controlled monitoring and management of patients’ radiation exposure.
A key impact of implementing this technology is the creation of safer and more optimized radiological examination procedures for patients. Radiation doses can be reduced to the minimum possible level without compromising image quality, thereby helping to lower the long-term risks associated with radiation exposure, particularly for patients who require repeated examinations and vulnerable groups such as children.
In addition to improving radiation safety, optimizing CT image quality also enhances radiologists’ diagnostic accuracy. Clear, highly detailed visualization of internal organs facilitates earlier, more accurate detection of various diseases, allowing medical treatment to be provided more quickly and effectively and ultimately contributing to improved public health.
Driving UNDIP’s World Class University (WCU) Ambitions
This outstanding achievement is not merely a personal accomplishment for Dr. Anam but also a reflection of the research ecosystem at Universitas Diponegoro, which continues to be strengthened. The UNDIP Rector expressed his highest appreciation for Dr. Anam’s consistency and research productivity.
Breaking into 48th place globally serves as concrete evidence of UNDIP’s commitment and tangible support in accelerating its strategic efforts to enter the top 500 World Class Universities (WCU). Amid increasingly intense global competition, academic reputation and international research citations play a crucial role.
“Dr. Anam’s achievement is an important catalyst for other members of the UNDIP academic community. It demonstrates that laboratories in Semarang can produce impactful research recognized and utilized by the international medical community. This is a concrete step for UNDIP to continue reaching greater heights on the global stage,” said the university management.
With this positive trend, UNDIP remains optimistic that it can continue to strengthen its scientific contributions globally while inspiring a new generation of Indonesian researchers to pursue their aspirations and produce impactful work at the highest international level.
