UNDIP–IWIP Opens Industrial Internship Opportunities, Strengthening Job-Ready Talent for the Nickel Downstreaming Sector

UNDIP, Semarang (4/9) – Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) is expanding students’ learning opportunities into the industrial environment through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) on Friday, September 4, 2026, at the Rector’s Meeting Room, 2nd Floor, Widya Puraya Building, UNDIP Tembalang Campus. The collaboration aims to bridge academic competencies and workforce needs while providing students with opportunities to gain professional experience in one of Indonesia’s nickel-processing industrial areas.

UNDIP Rector, Prof. Dr. Suharnomo, S.E., M.Si., and General Manager of HRD at PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park, Roslina Sangaji, officially signed the Memorandum of Understanding. The cooperation focuses on the development of the Three Pillars of Higher Education (Tridharma Perguruan Tinggi), particularly human resource development through student internship programs, as well as other areas that may be developed according to the needs of both parties.

Prof. Suharnomo warmly welcomed the PT IWIP management team and expressed his appreciation for the collaboration initiative, which is oriented toward delivering tangible benefits for students. He emphasized that integration between universities and natural resource processing industrial areas is essential to ensuring that university graduates possess job-ready skills that are relevant to industry needs.

“Link and match is often discussed, but in reality, activities in the field sometimes operate separately. Through interactions and concrete cooperation like this, we can better understand each other’s potential. UNDIP is very open to collaboration in recruitment and internships. We hope this partnership will bring blessings, progress, and tangible benefits to both parties and the wider community,” said the UNDIP Rector.

Meanwhile, Roslina Sangaji said that the partnership with UNDIP is a strategic step for the company to identify and develop the best human resources from leading universities. She emphasized the importance of Indonesia’s younger generation in taking on technological roles and strategic positions within the integrated industrial area.

“Our industrial area is developing very rapidly and needs outstanding talent from leading universities such as UNDIP to be developed into professionals capable of filling key positions within the company. We are offering not only internship experience but also quality accommodation and a safe, comfortable, and professional work environment. We hope UNDIP students will have the courage to seize this opportunity and return to campus with inspiring stories,” said Roslina.

Roslina also explained that students participating in the internship program will gain work experience in the IWIP industrial area in Central Halmahera, North Maluku. According to the company’s presentation, participants will receive support including apartment-standard accommodation in a designated area, lodging, free meals, insurance, work uniforms, round-trip airfare, and a stipend throughout the program. Internship opportunities are primarily available in fields relevant to industrial needs, including chemical engineering, industrial engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, geodesy, and geology, as well as vocational education, to support the operation of modern mineral downstreaming technologies. The duration of the internship can be adjusted to students’ academic requirements and the agreement between the university and the company.

The collaboration also provides students with an opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the scale and complexity of the mineral processing industry. PT IWIP manages a nickel-processing industrial area in Central Halmahera that encompasses nickel manufacturing, power generation, port operations, and various supporting industries. This multidisciplinary work environment can serve as a practical learning space for students to gain an understanding of technology applications, operational management, human resource management, and competency requirements in large-scale industries.

The event concluded with a ceremonial exchange of souvenirs and a group photo, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the strategic partnership between the two institutions. Also attending the event was UNDIP Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Ir. Heru Susanto, S.T., M.M., M.T., along with relevant university officials. Representing PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park were Senior Superintendent HRD Nizma Triana and HRD Supervisor Mulyawati E. Baridji.

This ongoing synergy is expected to produce UNDIP graduates who are not only academically strong, but also adaptive and ready to contribute directly to strengthening Indonesia’s industrial independence. (Public Communication/UNDIP/DHW)
