UNDIP, Semarang (October 29, 2025) – The Faculty of Law at Universitas Diponegoro, in collaboration with UNDIP’s Library Service Unit (UPT Perpustakaan), held a workshop titled “Optimizing the Use of Westlaw and Hein Databases Using AI”. The event aimed to enhance the academic community’s ability to improve research quality by utilizing international legal databases, supported by integrated systems and artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
The workshop was attended by Prof. Dr. Retno Saraswati, S.H., M.Hum., Dean of the Faculty of Law. Prof. Dr. Adian Fatchur Rochim, S.T., M.T., Vice Rector III of UNDIP, officially opened it. Two main speakers were featured: M. Farhan Avicenna, Westlaw Training Specialist for Indonesia, and Pujo Winarno, S.Kom., librarian of UNDIP Library and UNDIP Press.
In her remarks, Prof. Retno Saraswati expressed gratitude and appreciation for the successful organization of the event. She emphasized that this training serves as a strategic step to support the improvement of scientific publications and the university’s academic reputation.
“Through this training, it is expected that lecturers and students can optimally utilize the Westlaw platform to facilitate research and academic writing. This forum will make achieving indexed international publications easier,” she stated.
Meanwhile, Prof. Adian Fatchur Rochim highlighted the importance of increasing the number of Scopus-indexed publications by UNDIP lecturers as a key indicator of university performance. He emphasized that leveraging technology and legal databases, such as Westlaw, provides an effective solution to enhance academic productivity.
“Our target for 2026 is for each lecturer to have at least one Scopus-indexed publication. Publication is not just an administrative obligation but a real contribution to the institution’s reputation and the advancement of science,” he asserted.
During the main session, M. Farhan Avicenna demonstrated how to access Westlaw via UNDIP’s Single Sign-On (SSO) and introduced various AI-powered search features, including basic search, advanced search, filtering tools, and citation tools. Participants were also guided on how to save, share, and analyze legal documents through the digital system.
Pujo Winarno concluded the session by explaining the integration of UNDIP’s digital information resources with global legal databases, including HeinOnline and other supporting platforms.
Through this workshop, the Universitas Diponegoro academic community will become more proficient in accessing and managing digital legal literature, as well as in utilizing artificial intelligence to accelerate the research and publication process. (Public Communication/UNDIP/Viny ed. As3)
