Faculty of Medicine UNDIP Holds Interactive Lecture with Prof. Hwee Ming Cheng from Universiti Malaya Malaysia

Faculty of Medicine Diponegoro University (UNDIP) held a very interesting interactive lecture by inviting guest lecturer who have a global reputation in the field of physiology, namely Prof. Dr. Cheng Hwee Ming from Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The lecture which was held on Saturday, March 27th 2021 has received attention from enthusiasts of health problems.

Prof. Cheng is a cardiovascular physiologist who has been invited to share his knowledge in both Western and Eastern countries. Quoted from the Universiti Malaya official page, several books that have been written by him are Physiology Question Based Learning: Neurophysiology, Endocrine and Gastrointestinal systems, Physiology Question Based Learning, Physio-Question-based Learning in CVS, Respi and Renal systems. He also has several lectures which are freely accessible on the internet from home.

In his introduction, dr. Tanjung Ari Sumekar said that this online lecture was attended by 270 students from their respective places and the whole process was carried out in English. The lecture which was guided by a Faculty of Medicine Undip lecturer, Dr. Dr. Hardian, was held for approximately 80 minutes.

The lecture entitled “Physiology of Cardiovascular System” was held in a very interesting way, where Prof. Cheng had prepared 13 carefully designed statements so that all the key concepts of cardiovascular physiology could be discussed based on the 13 compiled statements. Despite that this event is discussing a special topic in great detail, Dr. dr Hardian, a physiology lecturer who is also the Head of Diponegoro University Pharmacy Study Program, as a moderator is success to attract the audience and keep the ambience relaxed and not too tense.

The method used by Prof. Cheng is to ask students to give their opinion whether the statement that has been prepared is true or false and to give reasons about the given opinion before. After that, Prof. Cheng gave detailed explanations one by one using student opinions as the basis for discussion. It is very interesting, where students and guest lecturers discuss questions and answers, Prof. Cheng is often not satisfied with the initial answer and asks students to elaborate. A very intense interaction was seen several times, when Prof. Cheng kept asking students to develop answers to the point that it made students asking for time to think.

Several statements discussed during the lecture were: 1) The duration of the pacemaker potential in increased by cardiac sympathetic nerve, 2) Starling’s law of the heart is no longer applicable in transplanted heart, 3) In the circulation, the greatest drop in pressure occurs at the capillary between the arteriole and venule end, 4) Sympathetic activity increases the capillary hydrostatic pressure, 5) During the baroreflex response in hypovolemia both the heart rate and stroke volume will increase above normal and 5) When the arterial compliance is decreased, both the systolic and diastolic pressures will increase.

At the end of the event, Dr. dr. Hardian admitted that he was very happy and proud that this event could be carried out well. Dr. dr. Hardian hopes that another time Prof. Cheng is willing to share his knowledge again with Undip academic community.
