dr. Novi Kusumaningrum, Sp.KK, Ph.D (Skin and Venereal Specialist of RSND UNDIP): Caring for Skin Health in a Pandemic Era must be Maintained

In the current pandemic era, people are encouraged to stay at home more and maintain physical distancing. The Covid-19 pandemic has forced most people to do their activities from home, whether in work, study, or worship. At this time, the skin also has the potential to be damaged due to changing habits, for example using masks for a long time which causes problems on the face such as acne, washing hands more often, using hand sanitizers, doing activities in air-conditioned rooms, and the impact of stress that affects skin damage.

“People only realize the damage after experiencing skin health problems, that they have not taken care of them properly from the start. Actually, the use of sunscreen from an early age is very good for skin health, if you are at the age of 30 or 40 years, using serum and moisturizer is also important. The skin needs hydration, otherwise the regeneration is not good, many skin cells die as a result and the skin becomes dull. Consume 8 glasses or 2 liters of water, get enough sleep, don’t stress too much, consume vitamins that contain antioxidants such as vitamin C or vitamin E and eat lots of vegetables and fruit,” said dr. Novi Kusumaningrum, Sp.KK, Ph.D, Skin and Venereal Specialist, Diponegoro National Hospital (RSND), Diponegoro University.

Furthermore, she said that the use of skincare for each person is different or the skin condition of the person is different, for example theoretically vitamin C is good but for oily skin and acne, high doses of vitamin C serum are not recommended. This means that you have to go back to know your skin types first, it is better to consult with a dermatologist to find out what type of skin you have and what skincare products are suitable for use.

“In choosing skincare, avoid products that are dangerous as best as possible, such as those containing mercury, hydroquinone and formalin. Routine skin care that should be done regularly is washing face, especially after traveling, using moisturizer according to the skin type, applying sunscreen, while night cream is used according to the needs of the skin as it is not mandatory. Caring for and maintaining skin beauty during the pandemic must continue to be done, don’t let our skin be tortured or neglected, for example because the use of masks. Don’t forget that health is our number one priority,” concluded dr. Novi. (Lin – Public Relations)
