Doctoral Student of Civil Engineering, FT UNDIP Achieved Perfect GPA and Graduated On Time

The Doctoral Study Program in Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering (FT) Diponegoro University (Undip) successfully graduated a doctoral student on time. The student is Dr. Nastain, S.T., M.T. (Academic Year 2019/2020) who achieved a Doctorate degree with a study period of 6 semesters or less than 3 years with a GPA of 4.00. Thus, Dr. Nastain, S.T., M.T. recorded as the 84th graduate for the Doctoral Program of Civil Engineering, FT Undip.

The exam which was held on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 in the 4th floor Theater Room of Dean Building, FT Undip was attended by the Examiner Team consisting of Prof. Ir. M. Agung Wibowo, M.M., M.Sc., Ph.D (Chairman of the Session/Examiner), Ilham Nurhuda, S.T., M.T., Ph.D. (Secretary of the Session/Examiner), Prof. Dr. Ir. Sri Sangkawati, M.S. (Examiner), Prof. Dr. Ir. Muhammad Arsyad Thaha, M.T. (External Examiner), Prof. Dr. Ir. Suripin, M.Eng (Promoter), Prof. Ir. Nur Yuwono, Dipl. HE, M.Sc, Ph.D. (Co-Promoter 1), and Prof. Dr. Ir. Sriyana, MS (Co-Promoter 2).

The lecturer from Jenderal Soedirman University (Unsoed) started to become a student of the Doctoral Program in Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Undip in 2019. Since the beginning as a doctoral student at Undip, he has had a fairly clear research proposal, namely research related to hollow-type breakwaters. which was then given the title “The Performance of Box Culvert Type Perforated Breakwater Hydraulic”. In this study, there are advantages in the form of material savings for the manufacture of breakwaters to support green construction.

During his first year of college, he completed theoretical courses and refined his research proposal based on input from his supervisors so that it could be tested at the end of his first year of college. After that, he started doing research in the laboratory which compared with the results of the theoretical analysis. During the research process, the Dean of FT Unsoed for the period of 2014-2018 also began to diligently write papers to be published in international seminars and journals.

Even though he had to temporarily separate from his family in Purwokerto, it did not dampen the spirit of Dr. Nastain, S.T., M.T. to complete his studies. This totality is shown by perseverance in attending lectures and conducting research. The results of his hard work in completing his doctoral studies paid off with the final examination of the dissertation in June 2022.

After correcting the draft and fulfilling all administrative requirements, he was finally declared a Doctor of Civil Engineering from Diponegoro University (Undip) with a study period of 6 semesters or less than 3 years. Furthermore, Dr. Nastain, S.T., M.T., explained some tips in undergoing his studies so that he can graduate on time with a perfect GPA. “Determine the topic of the dissertation study that is in accordance with our specialization and scientific mastery, and we must have it in our mind since registering as a student.” explained Dr. Nastain, S.T., M.T.

In addition, good communication with the promoter and co-promoter is also needed, so that the guidance on the topic of study/dissertation can be carried out regularly since the first semester. Scientific mastery of the dissertation is also important in order to convince the promoter and co-promoter.

“Read a lot of journals and books, so the promoter and co-promoter are quite confident in our scientific mastery of the dissertation and also the scientific basics that underlie the dissertation.” said the Council of Experts of the INTAKINDO DPP of Central Java for the 2021-2025 term of service.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Civil Engineering Doctoral Program FT Undip, Ilham Nurhuda, S.T., M.T., Ph.D. revealed that the success achieved by Dr. Nastain, S.T., M.T. can be used as an example for other students. “We wish you success, Mr. Nastain can be an example that other students can follow. Hopefully the knowledge obtained by Mr. Nastain during his studies benefited himself and society.” he said.

According to Ilham Nurhuda, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., the key to success in pursuing doctoral studies is that when you are officially a doctoral student, you must have a draft research proposal with a clear direction. We have to be able to use time well and effectively to stay focused on their research, so that we can prepare better for publications and dissertation drafts during the research process.

Head of the Department of Civil Engineering FT Undip, Jati Utomo Dwi Hatmoko, S.T., M.M., M.Sc., Ph.D. added that when students take doctoral studies, they do not only need intelligence, but also require the right preparation and strategy to finish on time. “In addition, perseverance and persistence are required during the doctoral study process and also good communication with promoters and co-promoters.” he concluded.
