“Education is a determining factor for the success of human development because education functions as a developer of knowledge, skills, values and culture. Education is considered successful if the output is a young generation who is intelligent, has character, has morals, and has personality. Higher education as part of the national education system has a heavy duty and responsibility because besides being expected to produce quality graduates, they also have competitiveness in the global market,” said Dr. Nunik Retno Herawati, S.Sos., M.Si., Lecturer at the Department of Political and Governance Sciences, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Diponegoro University (UNDIP).
In the scientific studies that led her to become a Doctor, Dr. Nunik raised the title of “Leadership and Management of Legal Entity State Universities (PTNBH)”. She said the status of PTNBH has provided several implications in the management or governance of independent decision-making as well as the right to manage universities independently, transparently and accountable. The success of achieving PTNBH goals is largely determined by the leadership factor.
“Leadership ability is determined by the accuracy in preparing strategic planning and the ability to perform analysis in carrying out institutional development. By being able to carry out strategic management, leaders will be able to take strategic policies based on choices from various alternatives that have been prepared and selected based on priorities,” she explained.
Furthermore, Dr. Nunik said leadership is also needed to be able to drive the organization, encourage and motivate subordinates. The choice of approach strategy can be carried out by leaders to be able to encourage and motivate subordinates. A leader either individually or in a group, may not be able to work alone but requires a group of other people known as subordinates, who are driven in such a way that these subordinates give dedication and contribution to the organization, especially in how to work effectively, efficiently, economically and productively. Leadership is a very important force behind the power of various organizations as well as to create effective organizations whose work scope includes what they can achieve, then mobilize the organization to change towards the new vision.
“The recommendation from this research is the need for higher education leaders to consider the sustainability of strategic choices based on the capabilities of their resources. A university that has become a legal entity is an independent university so it needs encouragement and efforts to fulfill its needs independently. The increasingly competitive PTNBH competition and the globalization of education demand the need for strategic policy innovations so that subordinates have an academic atmosphere which is capable of encouraging the achievement of the vision of becoming a World Class University,” she concluded.
