Undip Together with the Government and Industry are Making Efforts to Conserve Biodiversity in Indonesia

The Ranking Office and SDGs Center of Diponegoro University (Undip) held a National Webinar on SDGs Undip 2023 Series 1: Conservation of Biodiversity in Indonesia as a real effort to find common ideas in further implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 2023 Undip SDGs National Webinar Series 1 took place on Friday, March 31, 2023 at 13:30-15:45 WIB online via Zoom meeting and live YouTube. The invited speakers are drh. Indra Exploitasia, M.Si. (Director of Conservation of Species Biodiversity and Genetics, Ministry of Environment and Forestry), Prof. Dr. Tri Retnaningsih Soeprobowati, M.App.Sc. (Professor of Biology at Diponegoro University), and J. Irwan Hidayat (Director of PT. Sido Muncul Tbk’s Herbal and Pharmaceutical Industry).

Prof. Dr. Denny Nugroho Sugianto, S.T., M.Si. as the Head of the Undip Ranking Office stated that this webinar aims to support the SDGs, especially the 13th, 15th and 17th goals. Dr. Ir. Ambariyanto, M.Sc., Vice Rector 4 Undip representing the Undip Rector in his remarks explained the importance of preserving biodiversity for the benefit of the Indonesian people. “The threats are also big, such as lost of biodiversity, pollution, climate change, and exploitation. Because of that, the commitment of all parties is very important,” said Prof. Ambar.

The event continued with a presentation and discussion session led by Dessy Ariyanti, S.T., MT, Ph.D, Undip SDGs Center secretary as moderator.

The first speaker, drh. Indra Exploitasia, M.Si. presented material on the theme “Strategy for Conservation of Indonesia’s Biodiversity in the Framework of Sustainable Development”. He stated that there are 568 units of Indonesian conservation areas with an area of 26,894,122.42 hectares which are included in 5 national agendas for 2020-2024 Management of Conservation Areas and Biodiversity. “Biodiversity must be aligned with public health. Sustainability by paying attention to the environment even though there is economic development,” said Indra.

The second speaker, Prof. Dr. Tri Retnaningsih Soeprobowati, M.App.Sc. explained about “The Role of Universities in Preserving Indonesia’s Biodiversity”. This Biology Professor of Undip mentioned the importance of protecting biodiversity, cutting down one tree is the same as losing more than 30 species that depend on it. One of Undip’s contributions to the development and empowerment of Indonesia’s local resources is through Haliaster, a group of nature lovers from the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSM) Undip.

The third speaker, J. Irwan Hidayat discussed “The Company’s Contribution to Preserving Indonesia’s Biodiversity”. According to him, the condition of sea water which is getting higher every year is a big problem that must be solved together for the continuation of life on earth.

Together with the government and the industrial sector, Undip through this SDGs webinar is expected to be able to discuss the role and implementation of biodiversity conservation in Indonesia, and as an initial step to support Indonesia’s vision of 2050 Living Harmony with Nature.
