Faculty of Engineering UNDIP Selected to Host the Opening of the 2024 Olympiad

Saturday, December 16, 2023, the Faculty of Engineering Undip was appointed as the host for the opening of one of the most prestigious economic geology competitions in Indonesia, the 2024 OlympiAR. The opening event took place in the Engineering Hall, Prof. Ir. Eko Budihardjo, M.Sc. Building.

OlympiAR is a national scale Olympics held by Agincourt Resources, the company that manages the Martabe gold mine in North Sumatra. With the theme “Harmony in the Elements, Navigating Sustainable Mining Practices,” Agincourt Resources wants to invite geology students throughout Indonesia to actively participate in contributing to the development of sustainable mining science through their innovative ideas in the mining sector.

Noviandri, Director and Chief Finance Officer of Agincourt Resources, said that this competition was being held for the second time since it was first held in 2023. In the first event, representatives from the Faculty of Engineering, Diponegoro University, the Magsite Team, succeeded in winning first place.

“Since the beginning of our operations, we have been committed to implementing sustainable mining practices. One of them is by providing benefits in the world of education. Therefore, in 2024, we will hold OlympiAR for the second time. In the first year, the winner was from Undip,” he said.

Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Ir. M. Agung Wibowo, M.M, M.Sc., Ph.D., welcomed this offer from Agincourt Resources. He fully supports this competition because it is in line with Undip’s KPIs. “We from the Faculty of Engineering would like to thank Agincourt for being willing to continue doing very positive things. For us at the Faculty of Engineering, this (OlympiAR) can be an activity that can fill our key performance indicators (KPIs). Undip has 60 indicators, one of which is collaboration with industry,” he said.

Boedyo Dharmawan, Head of the Central Java ESDM Service, as a representative of the Governor of Central Java, appreciated the initiative from Agincourt Resources, which invited universities in Central Java and Indonesia to compete in this event. For him, students must be given space to develop and learn directly from industry. He hopes that OlympiAR can be a forum for this. “Students, as the nation’s successors, must develop and be given space to learn new knowledge in industry. OlympiAR is a means for that,” he said.

The plan is that the 2024 OlympiAR will be held from December 18, 2023, to January 24, 2024. The winners will receive prizes worth hundreds of millions of rupiah and the opportunity to intern for three whole months at Agincourt Resources.

Prof. Agung hopes that in the future, the participants, especially from the Undip Faculty of Engineering, will not only compete in OlympiAR but also collaborate with other universities. “Behind competition is friendship, meaning we have to collaborate. So, between universities, we must collaborate. Hopefully, the students will be able to collaborate.”
