Department of Communication Science at UNDIP Supports Quality Enhancement of Documentary Film Production through International Community Service 2025

UNDIP, Semarang (August 2, 2025) – Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) continues to demonstrate its commitment to enhancing the quality of documentary film production as a means of education and community empowerment. Through the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), UNDIP views film not only as an artistic expression but also as an effective medium for voicing social issues and developing the capacity of local communities to critically and creatively document and narrate reality.

As part of these efforts, FISIP UNDIP organized the International Community Service 2025 program titled “Documentary Film Production for Local Film Communities.” The event featured an international speaker, Dr. Dag Yngvesson, an experienced documentary filmmaker and academic who has been extensively involved in community-based film projects. His participation brought a global perspective to the training, which aimed to strengthen participants’ technical skills and critical understanding of documentary film production.

The three-day offline event commenced on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at the FISIP Undip Campus in Tembalang Sub-District. The opening ceremony included remarks from the Dean of FISIP UNDIP, Dr. Drs. Teguh Yuwono, M.Pol.Admin., and the Head of the Department of Communication Science, Dr. Agus Naryoso, S.Sos., M.Si. The first day covered foundational material on documentary pre-production. In contrast, the second and third days focused on hands-on production and editing exercises, designed to provide participants with direct experience in creating documentaries relevant to local issues.

This activity is the result of a collaboration between lecturers from the Department of Communication Science, including Dr. Hapsari Dwinintyas Sulistiyani, Dr. Lintang Ratri Rahmiaji, and M. Bayu Widagdo, M.I. Kom.

Participants included junior high school and high school students, university students, and members of film communities in Semarang City. They received intensive training in ideation, narrative development, cinematography, and post-production editing. The program was structured to be highly practical, ensuring participants gained a comprehensive understanding of the production process and the ability to create works with educational and social value.

The event concluded with an interactive discussion session, providing participants with a reflective space to present their work and receive feedback from the speaker and fellow attendees. This initiative is expected to serve as a foundational step in strengthening the capacity of local communities in documentary filmmaking and enhancing media literacy among the younger generation.

Through this program, UNDIP reaffirms its role as a higher education institution that supports the development of creative potential in society while promoting media as a sustainable tool for social empowerment. (Public Communication/ UNDIP/ Rifat)
