UNDIP Community Service Students Invite the Community to Love Reading

“The book is a window to the world” is a quote often heard. This quote means that reading books opens and broadens a person’s knowledge, allowing them to obtain information about various events and phenomena, such as economics, social issues, politics, culture, and others.

Therefore, everyone should read at least one book to gain information. Books can be borrowed from a library, which is a special place where books needed by many people are stored.

In today’s era, libraries must adapt to the development of technology, which has begun to reduce people’s interest in reading. Many libraries need more maintenance, and some are no longer in operation. Additionally, the phenomenon of low literacy rates in Indonesia, where people rarely read books because they are preoccupied with their gadgets, exacerbates the situation. Inadequate library facilities result in books being neglected. Kalangan Village Library is one of those facing this issue. Although there is a mobile library from the Sragen regency, it has not been sufficient to reach the interest of the youth in Kalangan village.

To address this problem, Otto Hari Febra Maheswara, an undergraduate History student and a member of UNDIP Community Service (Kuliah Kerja Nyata / KKN) Team II, introduced an electronic book site called Z-Library to provide easier access to literacy materials for the youth of Kalangan village, especially the Karang Taruna youth group.

After observing the neglected condition of the Kalangan village library’s books, Otto introduced Z-Library to the Karang Taruna youth. To explain the steps for using the site, he created a guidebook detailing how to use Z-Library.

This small guidebook, created on Wednesday (17/07/2024), is necessary to guide the Karang Taruna youth in using Z-Library on their gadgets. On Sunday (30/07/2024), the guidebook was handed over to Karang Taruna members in both soft file and hard copy formats.

With this introduction, it is hoped that the residents of Kalangan Village will be able to access e-books on their gadgets.
