UNDIP Library Introduces AI and PRISMA Tools for Literature Review Writing

UNDIP, Semarang (June 11, 2025) – Amid the sweeping waves of technological disruption, academia faces ongoing demands to adapt. One key area is the development of literature reviews, which must now be more transparent, systematic, and evidence-based. Responding to this need, the Library Unit of Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), in collaboration with UNDIP Press and the Communication Forum of Librarians and Library Managers at UNDIP (Forum Komunikasi Pustakawan dan Pengelola Perpustakaan UNDIP / FKP3U), held the 66th edition of its Webinar Series titled “Utilizing AI Tools in Literature Review Writing with the PRISMA Method” on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

Held virtually via a Zoom meeting, the webinar served as an educational platform to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) works with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) methodology—an internationally recognized standard for conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

The main speaker was Prof. Ferry Efendi, S.Kep., Ns., M.Sc., Ph.D., a professor from the Faculty of Nursing Science at Universitas Airlangga. Prof. Ferry is a prominent figure in the global academic community, ranked among the top 2% of scientists internationally by Elsevier and Stanford University for three consecutive years (2022–2024).

The webinar opened with remarks from Prof. Dr. Adian Fatchur Rochim, S.T., M.T., Vice-Rector for Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal Affairs, and Organizational Affairs at UNDIP. He praised the relevance of the topic and highlighted its role in UNDIP’s academic digital transformation efforts.

“This topic is highly relevant for graduate students and early-career researchers. The tools introduced provide valuable support in navigating tech-driven research environments. We hope this initiative greatly benefits graduate students and lecturers in advancing their research,” said Prof. Adian.

He also encouraged librarians and administrative staff to initiate both independent and collaborative research. “We hope that administrative staff and librarians will start engaging in their research and collaborate with faculty under various schemes to publish their findings,” he added.

In his presentation, Prof. Ferry emphasized that a literature review is not merely an academic requirement but a foundational step in constructing meaningful and robust research.

He outlined five key stages in the PRISMA method:

  1. Formulating the Research Question – defining the topic, scope, and objectives.
  2. Identifying Relevant Studies – using MeSH terms and scholarly databases.
  3. Study Selection – employing layered screening and PRISMA diagram visualization.
  4. Charting the Data – organizing key information from selected studies.
  5. Reporting Results – presenting findings clearly and without bias.

One of the session’s highlights was the introduction of Scopus AI, an AI-powered tool designed to accelerate and enhance the literature review process. With features that help identify research gaps, explore new topics, and generate accurate summary references, AI is positioned not as a replacement for researchers but as a tool to strengthen the research process.

“AI is not here to replace researchers but to enhance research processes, making them more efficient and precise. However, accountability and transparency, as emphasized in PRISMA, must always be upheld,” Prof. Ferry asserted.

He also shared practical tips on using Scopus AI, which leverages RAG Fusion technology, prompt engineering, and Copilot integration to assist researchers create PRISMA-based literature reviews more effectively.

With over 450 participants from various backgrounds, the webinar demonstrated a growing interest in integrating technology into academic research. Many attendees appreciated the practical insights and the collaborative spirit conveyed throughout the event.

The webinar not only enriched participants’ knowledge but also reaffirmed the commitment of UNDIP’s Library and UNDIP Press to building a research culture rooted in evidence and collaboration—aligned with UNDIP’s vision as a world-class research university. (Public Communication/UNDIP/DHW)
