UNDIP Industrial Engineering Students Visit BBSPJPPI and BPSMB: Learning Industry Standards and Product Certification

UNDIP, Semarang (June 16, 2025) – To conclude their course on Standardization and Conformity Assessment, students from the Industrial Engineering study program at Universitas Diponegoro’s Faculty of Engineering embarked on an educational visit to two key institutions: the Center for Standardization and Industrial Pollution Prevention Services (Balai Besar Standardisasi dan Pelayanan Jasa Pencegahan dan Pencemaran Industri / BBSPJPPI) and the Commodity Quality Testing and Certification Center (Balai Pengujian dan Sertifikasi Mutu Barang / BPSMB). Held on June 3–4, 2025, the visit served as a practical bridge between classroom theories and field applications.

Accompanied by lecturers Dr. Ir. Bambang Purwanggono, M.Eng, and Prof. Dr.rer.Oec. Arfan Bakhtiar, S.T., M.T., students explored critical processes that underpin industrial and trade quality—ranging from product testing and equipment calibration to certification aligned with national and international standards.

On the first day, BBSPJPPI, a body under the Ministry of Industry welcomed the students. During a presentation session, they were introduced to the essential procedures involved in industrial product testing and certification, including sample collection, laboratory analysis, production process inspection, and verification of technical documents.

BBSPJPPI emphasized the importance of modern laboratory infrastructure in ensuring product quality. Students toured the labs and observed firsthand how products such as food, electronics, and measuring instruments are tested. “This experience opened our eyes to how meticulous the process is before a product is deemed market-ready,” said one student.

The following day, the group visited BPSMB, which operates under the coordination of the Jawa Tengah Office of Industry and Trade. BPSMB plays a strategic role in ensuring product quality and calibrating measuring tools used in marketplaces.

Students learned about the critical role of calibration in maintaining measurement accuracy—vital in industrial production lines. They observed chemical and physical testing labs and witnessed the calibration of various instruments. The visit was made more engaging with a lively Q&A session featuring educational games and souvenirs for active participants.

Due to space limitations, only 80 students could attend the BBSPJPPI visit and 30 were allowed to visit the BPSMB. Acknowledging this, the lecturers emphasized the importance of knowledge sharing. Students who attended were tasked with disseminating insights to their peers through discussions and reflective reports.

The visit not only enhanced students’ technical understanding but also broadened their perspectives on the significance of standards and certification in ensuring product quality and safety.

“Students are not just learning theory; they’re witnessing firsthand how standards are implemented,” said Prof. Arfan Bakhtiar. “This is essential preparation for entering the industrial workforce.”

“We want our students to support one another through shared learning,” added Dr. Bambang. “Even if not all could attend, the spirit of knowledge-sharing must remain strong.” (Public Communication/FT UNDIP/Prof. Arfan; Ed. DHW)
