Patriot Expedition 2025: UNDIP Strengthens Academic Collaboration for Transmigration Area Growth

Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) is taking an active role in the Patriot Expedition Program, a strategic initiative launched by Indonesia’s Ministry of Transmigration. The program will run for the next five years. This year, UNDIP deployed 57 expedition teams from five faculties: Engineering, Animal and Agricultural Sciences, Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Social and Political Sciences, and Economics and Business.

The participants include 57 lecturers, 120 students, 106 alumni, and two students from Tadulako University. They will be assigned to 13 provinces, 35 districts, and cities across Indonesia to carry out community service based on cross-disciplinary collaborative research.

The program represents collaboration between the government and universities to support the implementation of Law No. 59 of 2024 on the National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN) 2025–2045, particularly in establishing rural and urban areas as centers of economic growth through the development of Integrated Transmigration Economic Zones (KETT).

Each UNDIP team will deliver outcomes tailored to the local potential and characteristics of their assigned regions. These include recommendations for evaluating transmigration areas, designs for the development of region-specific leading commodities, models for local economic institutional collaboration, concepts for maritime connectivity and inter-island transportation, and strategies for community-based corporations and downstreaming of marine products.

To ensure a smooth implementation, the UNDIP Patriot Expedition Team held a coordination meeting on August 1, 2025, at the ICT Building on the Tembalang Campus.

The meeting featured key speakers from the expedition management, including Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wiwandari Handayani, Person in Charge (PIC) of the Patriot Transmigration Program; Prof. Dr. Achmad Zulfa Juniarto, PIC of the Patriot Expedition; Prof. Dr.nat.tech. Siswo Sumardiono, UNDIP’s Director of Academic Affairs; and Dr. Nurul Hasfi, Director of Media, Community, and Public Communication, who spoke about the program’s publication strategies. The event was opened by Prof. Dr. Ing. Ir. Suherman, Chair of the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) UNDIP, and attended by faculty supervisors serving as team leaders.

The speakers outlined technical guidance for the 2025 Patriot Expedition, including mechanisms for academic credit conversion and plans for program publication. Prof. Handayani emphasized that the program is a concrete step by the Ministry of Transmigration to integrate research and community service within the development of transmigration regions. Scheduled from August to December 2025, the program’s outputs will include weekly logbooks, daily videos, and media content published both academically and publicly.

Prof. Sumardiono noted that the expedition can be converted into academic credits equivalent to 20 credit units (excluding final projects), depending on the program’s policies. It may also be recognized as an alternative to the Community Service Program (KKN).

Dr. Nurul Hasfi, S.Sos., M.A. added that publications will be divided into two streams: community service journals and popular media. All teams are expected to document their work for inclusion in the “Patriot Expedition” folder, which will be distributed through UNDIP TV’s YouTube channel, internal media, and external outlets via the Jejak Directorate network.

The 2025 Patriot Expedition is expected to strengthen universities’ active role in developing integrated and sustainable transmigration areas. The program aims not only to link research with community service but also to encourage real contributions to the development of transmigration regions, enhancing both the quality of human resources and the creation of sustainable economic ecosystems.

The initiative aligns with national policy directions outlined in Law No. 59 of 2024 on RPJPN 2025–2045, particularly in developing KETT, and also supports the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).

More than just a community service program, the 2025 Patriot Expedition is envisioned as a collaborative platform among government, academia, and local communities to create adaptive, inclusive, and locally driven models for transmigration area development. (Public Communication/ UNDIP/ Patriot Expedition Team)
