UNDIP, Semarang (December 16, 2025) – Universitas Diponegoro hosted The 2025 UI GreenMetric Indonesia Awarding, officially opened at the Muladi Dome, Tembalang Campus, on Tuesday, December 16, 2025. The opening ceremony featured a joint gunungan-lifting procession symbolizing bedol gunungan, performed by the Minister of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Hanif Faisol Nurofiq; Vice Governor of Central Java H. Taj Yasin Maimoen; Director of Institutional Affairs of the Directorate General of Higher Education, Prof. Dr. Mukhamad Najib; UNDIP Rector Prof. Dr. Suharnomo; Head of UI GreenMetric Vishnu Juwono; and UI Rector Prof. Heri Hermansyah. This procession marked the beginning of the 2025 UI GreenMetric Indonesia national agenda, joined by hundreds of universities across the country.

Carrying the theme “Green and Sustainable Campus: Supporting Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission and Shaping The Next Generation of Sustainability Leaders,” the event was attended by university rectors from across Indonesia, higher education stakeholders, and guests. Beyond the award ceremony, the agenda included a national talk show, a green technology exhibition, and collaborative forums showcasing best practices for sustainable campus management.

In his keynote speech, the Minister of Environment/Head of the Environmental Control Agency, Dr. Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, S.Hut., M.P., stated that support for UI GreenMetric reflects the nation’s trust in the academic community as the frontliners of environmental sustainability, as the ranking is built on measurable academic processes and strict indicators. “Without the support of research, innovation, and critical thinking from universities, the government would not be able to formulate resilient and impactful environmental policies,” he said.

Similarly, the Director of Institutional Affairs of the Directorate General of Higher Education, Prof. Dr. Mukhamad Najib, S.TP., M.M., emphasized that the agenda of impactful campuses has become a direction of national higher education policy, in which UI GreenMetric serves as a reflective mirror to ensure that education, research, and community service truly contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as creating social, economic, and environmental impact for society.

As the host, UNDIP Rector Prof. Dr. Suharnomo, S.E., M.Si., expressed that hosting the 2025 UI GreenMetric Indonesia Awarding is both an honor and a great responsibility for UNDIP. He asserted that the event is not merely about celebrating rankings but about celebrating the collective commitment of Indonesian universities to sustainability. “Today we celebrate The Story of Our Institution and Society—the real narratives of how our campuses have become beacons in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals,” he remarked, welcoming delegates to UNDIP People’s Campus, the heart of Semarang City.

As the National Coordinator of UI GreenMetric Indonesia, Prof. Suharnomo reaffirmed UNDIP’s commitment to amplifying sustainability values not only on campus but also in society. He noted that campuses must become living laboratories where renewable energy innovation, waste management, water conservation, and SDGs-based community service are tested and applied in real-world practice. In line with UNDIP’s tagline ‘Noble and Valuable’, he encouraged all universities to use this event as a catalyst for collaboration and sharing best practices for the sustainability of Indonesia and the world.

Head of UI GreenMetric, Vishnu Juwono, S.E., M.I.A., Ph.D., explained that the 2025 UI GreenMetric Indonesia Awarding represents the culmination of a year-long ranking process that has taken place since June 2025 through national and global outreach and mentoring, as well as a form of appreciation for the consistency of universities in fulfilling the six leading UI GreenMetric indicators.

He emphasized that sustainability issues are no longer future discourse but real policy agendas requiring collective action, as highlighted by various environmental disasters, including flash floods in several regions of Sumatra. With participation from more than 1,700 universities across over 100 countries in 2025—the highest in UI GreenMetric’s history—he underscored the strategic role of universities as drivers of change through education, research, community service, and sustainable institutional governance.

In his report, UNDIP Vice Rector IV for Research, Innovation, Collaboration, and Public Communication, Wijayanto, S.IP., M.Si., Ph.D., expressed gratitude for the trust given to UNDIP as the host of the 2025 UI GreenMetric Indonesia Awarding. He stated that the event is not merely ceremonial but a tangible manifestation of Indonesian universities’ commitment to preserving the Earth through green, sustainable campus management and to strengthening inter-institutional collaboration.

Wijayanto, Ph.D., also reported that the event was attended by 210 university delegates from across Indonesia, consisting of 52 public universities under the Directorate General of Higher Education, 16 religious-based universities, and 12 polytechnics and vocational institutions—reflecting the strengthening of an inclusive and interdisciplinary sustainability vision. Beyond the awarding ceremony, the agenda included a national talk show, a green innovation exhibition, and a campus tour featuring UNDIP’s flagship products, including the Voca Water innovation, reinforcing UNDIP’s commitment to developing environmentally friendly technologies for a greener and more sustainable Indonesia.

On this occasion, Wijayanto also expressed his appreciation to the UNDIP Rector and all committee members for their support and hard work, and hoped that this forum would strengthen collaboration toward a greener, more sustainable Indonesia.

Through the Campus Tour, participants were invited to observe UNDIP’s sustainability ecosystem, including the Vocational School’s Teaching Factory, the Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST), and the Diponegoro Reservoir, a hub for water conservation and environmental education. This activity demonstrated how the green campus concept is translated into concrete, measurable, and sustainable practices.

Through this forum, UNDIP and UI GreenMetric encourage concrete collaboration among universities to build adaptive, sustainable green campuses, while strengthening the contribution of higher education institutions to national and global development agendas. (Public Communication/UNDIP/DHW)
