UNDIP, Tokyo (6/3) – As part of its contribution to international SDGs forums, Dr. phil. Dian Veronika Sakti Kaloeti, S.Psi., M.Psi, a lecturer from the Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), presented her research on the psychological experiences of Indonesian incarcerated women who are survivors of domestic violence. The presentation took place at the international conference, The Network for Education and Research on Peace and Sustainability (NERPS), held at the United Nations University (UNU) in Tokyo, Japan, from March 4–7, 2026.
In her presentation titled “From Violence to Resilience: Narratives of Indonesian Incarcerated Women Survivors of Domestic Abuse,” Dr. Vio—her commonly used name—shared insights from women inmates who had endured prolonged domestic violence prior to incarceration.
The findings revealed four key themes that reflect the psychological and cultural dimensions of their experiences, including trauma and psychological distress, disrupted identity and self-worth, the role of culture and society in responding to domestic violence, and the emergence of resilience alongside identity reconstruction.
The research also highlights the importance of recognizing the interconnectedness between domestic violence, cultural expectations, and the criminal justice system. The findings suggest the need for a more trauma-informed approach within legal systems, as well as improved access to psychological support and assistance for women affected by domestic violence.
Through this forum, Dr. Vio also established cross-country research collaborations and opened opportunities for international academic partnerships, particularly related to the SDGs. This achievement further strengthens UNDIP’s international research collaboration, a strategic element in enhancing the university’s global reputation and competitiveness.
This effort aligns with the tagline “Noble and Valuable UNDIP,” reflecting the university’s commitment to advocating for and protecting women affected by violence. (Public Communication/UNDIP/Faculty of Psychology PR Team)
