UNDIP, Semarang (4/8) – The Faculty of Humanities at Universitas Diponegoro (FIB UNDIP) officially launched The 4th International Conference on Culture and Sustainable Development (ICOCAS 2026) on August 4–5, 2026. Held under the theme “Rethinking Environmental Sustainability in Indonesia: Environmental Justice and Community Resilience,” the annual international conference was conducted in a hybrid format, with in-person sessions at Hotel Aruss Semarang and online via Zoom.
This prestigious event serves as an interdisciplinary academic forum that addresses critical issues related to climate change, environmental justice, and community resilience from the perspectives of culture and the humanities.
International Speakers from Across the Globe
ICOCAS 2026 features distinguished scholars and experts from around the world as keynote speakers, including:
- Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohamad Noorman Masrek (Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia)
- Tori Bush, Ph.D. (Tulane University, United States)
- Prof. Fridus Steijlen (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands)
- Dr. Amir Rashad Bin Mustaffa (Universiti Malaya, Malaysia)
- Prof. Ivo Carneiro De Sousa (Macao Polytechnic University, Macao)
- Anita Dewi, Ph.D. (Charles Sturt University, Australia)
- Dr. Niall Curry (Manchester Metropolitan University, United Kingdom)
The conference was officially opened with welcoming remarks by the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Dr. Alamsyah, M.Hum., and the Vice Rector IV of Universitas Diponegoro, Wijayanto, S.IP., M.Si., Ph.D.
Addressing Environmental Issues Through Cultural Perspectives
Through major sub-themes such as Environmental Publics, Media, and Cultural Discourse, Community Resilience and Environmental Justice, and Ecology, Environment, and Climate Change, participants explored the role of local wisdom in responding to ecological crises.
“This conference not only examines theoretical perspectives but also focuses on community resilience in responding to environmental crises through local wisdom and cultural discourse,” said Dean of FIB UNDIP, Prof. Alamsyah, in his opening remarks.
Two-Day Conference Program
ICOCAS 2026 features a comprehensive two-day program:
- Day One (August 4, 2026): Opening ceremony, welcoming remarks from university leaders, keynote presentations, and interactive question-and-answer sessions moderated by Fitrilya Anjarsari, S.S., M.A. and Lina Rosliana, S.S., M.Hum.
- Day Two (August 5, 2026): Parallel presentation sessions, providing opportunities for internal and external researchers to present their scholarly papers in multiple conference rooms.
Selected papers presented at the conference will be published in the internationally recognized IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science proceedings. Through the organization of ICOCAS 2026, the Faculty of Humanities at Universitas Diponegoro reaffirms its commitment to contributing to sustainable development while strengthening global academic collaboration and research networks.
