UNDIP, Yogyakarta (15/9) – Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) has once again demonstrated its commitment to sustainable campus development by keeping its second-place position among Indonesia’s Most Sustainable Universities in the 2026 UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings (UIGM SUR) Indonesia. The achievement further underscores UNDIP’s consistent performance in the UIGM SUR Indonesia rankings. From 2020 to 2026, UNDIP has secured second place nationally among the country’s institutions for seven consecutive years.
The 2026 UIGM SUR Indonesia announcement and awards ceremony was held at Grha Sabha Pramana, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Yogyakarta, on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. Organized by UI GreenMetric with UGM serving as host, the event was attended by representatives of higher education institutions participating in UIGM SUR Indonesia 2026.
In addition to maintaining its second-place national ranking, UNDIP received awards as the most sustainable higher education institution in the Energy and Climate Change and Transportation categories.
UNDIP Rector Prof. Dr. Suharnomo, S.E., M.Si., said the achievement was the result of collaboration among all elements of the UNDIP community. He noted that maintaining second place nationally was no easy task, as it required consistent efforts across various units throughout the university.
“Alhamdulillah, this year we were able to retain second place. I believe this was not easy. This achievement reflects the tremendous work of the Directorate of Reputation, Partnerships, and Global Connectivity, colleagues at the rectorate, university units, faculties, departments, study programs, and the entire Universitas Diponegoro community,” Prof. Suharnomo said.
Beyond just a ranking achievement, Prof. Suharnomo emphasized that sustainability needs to become part of everyone’s daily life at UNDIP.
“We do not want this to be merely about winning second place. We want sustainability to be internalized and become part of everyone at Diponegoro University. We want it to become a green lifestyle as we move toward greater sustainability in the future,” he said.
UNDIP has implemented various initiatives to strengthen the application of sustainability principles across campus. One of these is the UNDIP Zero Waste declaration, which forms part of the university’s efforts to promote sustainable environmental management.
In transportation, UNDIP has also strengthened its sustainability efforts by procuring 220 UNDIP E-Bikes. The electric vehicles are part of the university’s efforts to promote a more sustainable campus transportation system.
“Last year, we declared UNDIP Zero Waste. This year, we improved our transportation system by introducing 220 UNDIP E-Bikes. I believe this marks a significant breakthrough for us,” Prof. Suharnomo said.
In the future, UNDIP will continue to develop its sustainability programs by referring to the indicators and guidance of UI GreenMetric. These efforts are aimed not only at maintaining the university’s ranking, but also at ensuring that sustainable practices become increasingly embedded in academic life and campus governance. “Next year, hopefully, by referring to the guidance from UI GreenMetric, we can introduce another breakthrough to maintain this position and, even better, move up to first place. Hopefully, although that will be very challenging, the most important thing is for this to become a lifestyle for us to ensure sustainability,” he concluded. (Public Communication/UNDIP/Hng)
