UNDIP, Semarang (17/9) – Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) at Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), Prof. Agus Trianto, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., has been re-elected as Chair of the Indonesian Forum of Higher Education Institutions for Fisheries and Marine Science (Forum Komunikasi Perguruan Tinggi Perikanan dan Kelautan / FKPTPK) for the 2026–2028 term. This marks the second time Prof. Agus has been entrusted with leading the forum, which serves as a platform for communication and collaboration among higher education institutions in the fisheries and marine sectors.
The election of the forum chair was one of the agendas of the 2nd FKPTPK Indonesia Meeting, held at the FPIK UNDIP Auditorium in Tembalang, Semarang, on Thursday (10/9/2026). UNDIP hosted the meeting, which took place from September 9–11, 2026, and was attended by representatives of higher education institutions in the fisheries and marine fields from various regions across Indonesia.
In his brief remarks following his re-election, Prof. Agus affirmed his commitment to continuing and implementing the work programs jointly developed by the FKPTPK board.
“This forum provides a valuable opportunity to discuss various issues around us, particularly those related to fisheries and marine science in Indonesia. Although 70 percent of Indonesia’s territory consists of ocean and the country has the world’s second-longest coastline, this advantage has yet to become a strong attraction for young people to pursue studies and careers in fisheries and marine science,” Prof. Agus said.
According to Prof. Agus, one of the forum’s main priorities is to increase prospective students’ interest in pursuing studies in fisheries and marine science. This effort includes formulating recommendations for the government and policymakers to ensure that policies and programs in the fisheries and marine sectors deliver tangible benefits to communities while increasing the appeal of these fields to younger generations.
In addition to increasing prospective students’ interest, FKPTPK will strengthen collaborative networks among higher education institutions. Stronger networks are expected to create broader opportunities for collaboration across education, research, human resource development, and other areas.
The forum will also promote the compilation of research data, including research titles and topics conducted by member institutions. The database is expected to provide an overview of the fisheries and marine research landscape in Indonesia while creating opportunities for collaboration among higher education institutions.
Another area of focus is the nomenclature and academic degrees in fisheries and marine science. The forum considers it necessary to review the current terminology to make it more relevant to developments in the field and labor market needs, including the possibility of modernizing the names of academic programs or fields of study to make them more appealing and easier for the public to understand.
FKPTPK will also discuss strengthening the body of knowledge as a foundation for the development of higher education in fisheries and marine science. This is closely related to curriculum development, which must maintain competency achievement standards while allowing each study program room to preserve its distinctive characteristics.
Prof. Agus cited examples of higher education institutions with distinctive characteristics that have successfully attracted students. Such uniqueness can be further developed through international cooperation programs and overseas internship opportunities. According to him, the distinctive characteristics of each study program can serve as a strength in increasing the attractiveness of higher education in fisheries and marine science.
In addition to these programs, the forum also considers it necessary to review its organizational nomenclature. According to its notarial deed, the forum is officially registered as the Forum of Leaders of Higher Education Institutions for Fisheries and Marine Science (FPPTK). Adjusting the forum’s name is one of the matters to be discussed to ensure that its organizational nomenclature reflects the forum’s current development and functions.
The Indonesian Forum of Leaders of Higher Education Institutions for Fisheries and Marine Science (FP2TPKI/FKPTPK) serves as a platform for communication and collaboration among faculty and study program leaders in fisheries and marine science from higher education institutions across Indonesia. The forum provides a space to align visions for the development of higher education in fisheries and marine science, discuss curriculum and graduate competency enhancement, strengthen the contribution of academia to the development and governance of Indonesia’s marine and fisheries sectors, and respond to developments in higher education policies and the dynamics of the national fisheries and marine sectors.
Since its establishment in September 2017, FKPTPK has held regular meetings and working sessions at member institutions on a rotating basis. Currently, around 151 higher education institutions are registered as forum members, comprising both public and private institutions. The forum also provides opportunities for collaboration with government-affiliated and vocational higher education institutions under the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), including campuses now integrated into the Ocean Institute of Indonesia (OII). With the re-election of Prof. Agus Trianto as chair for the 2026–2028 term, FKPTPK is expected to strengthen synergy among higher education institutions further and promote the contributions of fisheries and marine higher education to addressing Indonesia’s maritime development challenges.
